Corbin falls to Clay County Tuesday night in CFIT finals
The Corbin Redhounds defeated Berea and Union County, SC en route to Tuesday night’s championship game of the 2015 Cumberland Falls Invitational. For more on how the Hounds made it to the CFIT finals pick up the 12/30 edition of The News Journal, but as for the championship game itself, the host team would have to overcome a Clay County Tigers squad that had already defeated them by 30-plus points earlier this season.
This time around things would end up being much closer, but the Tigers would ultimately prevail again, winning by a final score of 55-50. It was still anybody’s ball game at half time, with Clay leading by only five points, 19-14. Corbin had trouble getting shots to fall in the third quarter, however, scoring only two points to Clay’s 16.
At this point any hopes for a Redhound victory seemed bleak. They were able to hit some big shots down the stretch and pull back to within single digits, but by then time was not on their side. Eventually, the final whistle sounded and the Clay County Tigers became the champions of the 2015 CFIT. With the loss, Corbin falls to 6-6 on the season.
After the game, Redhounds Head Coach Tony Pietrowski said, “We have to score with the ball better. We have to be able to put more points up, and that just makes defense a little bit easier. Defensively we were good enough to win tonight. We just have to figure out ways to score better that what we’ve been doing, and I think this team has the ability to do that.”
Looking ahead, Pietrowski said, “We have a great stretch of home games ahead of us against a lot of high quality teams. My big thing right now is I want us to get into practice and explore ways that we can get better individually, and as a team. There is a lot ahead for this team, and I think that the upside is tremendous for us.”
