Corbin falls
The Corbin 11 year old Little League All-Stars saw their post-season come to an end last week at Hazard with a 9-0 loss to the host team. Corbin had lost to South London in the semifinals 6-4 after losing a 4-0 lead.
Corbin missed on an opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when Keaton Burton and Nick Howlington drew walks. But a pop out by Justin Olsen and strike outs to Derek Terry and Austin Powers ended the threat.
Corbin then spotted Hazard a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the inning when J.T. Haynes led off with a single then scored on a Mike Neace single.
The local 11 year olds tried to fight back in the top of the second with two outs. Tanner Powers drew a walk and John-Benjamin Chadwell followed with one of the three base hits for Corbin. But, the inning ended when Burton grounded back to the mound.
Hazard pulled away in the top of the fourth when the host scored six runs to go ahead 7-0. Austin Johnson led off with a single followed by a Mike Neace triple. Hazard hit three more doubles in the inning before Chad Brown came in and halted the onslaught.
Brandon Howington led off the top of the fifth with a single. He went to second on a passed ball but the inning ended on a controversial double play.
Olsen had a one-out double in the top of the sixth but he was left stranded when Terry and Austin Powers grounded out.
Corbin landed in the loser’s bracket with a “tough loss” to South London in the winners’ bracket semifinals. Corbin started the game hot with four runs in the top of the first inning.
A Derek Terry double and a Hunter Grubb single accounted for three RBI’s. Olsen then scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.
The score stood at 4-0 until the bottom of the third when South London put a run on the scoreboard against starter, Garrett Anderson. “He was awesome,” said coach Kevin Terry. “I couldn’t ask for any more of a starting pitcher.”
“We had a chance in the fourth inning when we loaded the bases,” said Terry. But, a pop out and a runner getting picked off ended the threat.
Nick Howington came on in relief in the bottom of the fifth inning and ran into control problems. He hit two batters then South London got three hits. The rally led to five runs and a 6-4 South London lead.
Marcus Kuhl shut down the Corbin offense in the final inning to claim the narrow two-run win.
“We didn’t hit the ball well against Hazard,” said Terry.
Corbin ended the tournament with a win over Harlan before the back to back losses.
