Corbin edges Whitley Co. in girls’ action
Corbin and Whitley County went into their district match-up Thursday night with opening season losses, Corbin to Monticello and Whitley County to Jackson County.
So, it was no surprise the battle between the two went down to the wire with Corbin pulling out a 45-41 victory.
It was Whitley County taking the early lead despite two ties in the first eight minutes but at the end of the quarter the Lady Colonels owned a 14-11 lead thanks to baskets by Holly Jones and Kayla Osborne.
However, it didn’t take long for Corbin junior Kelci Jones to take charge for the Lady Redhounds. Jones scored the first two baskets for Corbin while Osborne added a bucket for the Lady Colonels. A pair of free throws by Jones with 2:59 left in the period gave Corbin the lead, 17-16.
It was a Jones basket at the end of the quarter that gave Corbin a 21-18 lead at the half.
The game stayed close throughout but a pair of free throws by Jones sent Corbin ahead 30-22 with 2:15 left in the third period and the Lady Redhounds threaten to break the game open.
But, by the end of the quarter Holly Jones and Osborne had answered for the Lady Colonels and Whitley County only trailed by four (30-26) heading into the fourth quarter.
The game came down to free throws and Corbin got their fair share. The Lady Redhounds hit 11 of 12 in the two and a half minutes compared to Whitley County’s three for four. The Lady Redhounds won the game at the line where Corbin connected on 19 of 26 while Whitley County converted seven of nine in the loss.
A pair of free throws by Jones pushed Corbin ahead, 40-34 with 2:03 left, but Whitley County refused to go away and scored the next seven points, taking a 41-40 lead with 1:15 remaining.
It was Osborne, a senior guard, taking charge for the Lady Colonels. Osborne scored two baskets and hit two free throws in the run.
Corbin continued its sharp shooting at the free throw line down the stretch as Jones put the Lady Redhounds back on top with a pair of free throws with 1:09 remaining, Lyndsay Champlin hit one of two then Kendra Igo sealed the win with two more.
Jones led the Lady Redhounds with 17 points while Igo tossed in 10 points to pace Corbin to the win. Osborne of the Lady Colonels led all scorers with 20 points.
Corbin’s game against Bell County Monday was postponed until a later date after the death of three students and a former student Saturday. The Lady Redhounds will take on Lynn Camp Thursday night and host South Laurel Monday night.
