Corbin downs Yellow Jackets
The Corbin Redhounds swept the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets at House Field Monday night to secure the number one seed in the upcoming 50th District Baseball Tournament.
The Redhounds took the first game in the best-of-three series, 6-4, and then took the nightcap, 8-5.
With the games scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, the coaches got together and decided to play a doubleheader with Williamsburg serving as the “home” team in game one.
Senior Drew Farley got the Redhounds on the scoreboard first in the top of the first frame. After brother, Zack Farley struck out, Drew hit a single to reach first. He stole second and third then scored on a two-out single by Brady Foley.
Ryan Clouse made it 2-0 in the top of the second with a base hit. Hunter Grubb drove in Clouse with a double to left field.
The Yellow Jackets (7-12) tied the game in the bottom of the second inning when Jonathan Teague drew a walk from Corbin pitcher Coty Jackson. Ethan Powers followed with a bunt before Donnie Bowlin had a one-out single to center field to score Teague.
With runners on the corners Cody Perkins followed with a hit to right field to drive in Powers, tying the game at two apiece. The Jackets loaded the bases when Andrew Root singled to shallow center field and CeJay Jones walked. But, Hunter Williams grounded out to Jackson for the third out of the inning.
Williamsburg put the pressure on the Redhounds in the fourth by adding two runs, Powers drew a walk and Jared Barton had a single to center field. Bowlin followed with a base hit and Perkins drove in two runs with a double to left field. The Jackets owned a 4-2 lead at the end of four.
Corbin exploded for four runs in the top of the fifth then held on for the win. Drew Farley, Trace Vorbeck, Foley and Josh Coppock all scored in the inning. Back-to-back errors cost Williamsburg two runs in the inning.
Game two was as every bit exciting as the first contest. Corbin again broke out to the early lead when Drew Farley smashed a home run with one out. Vorbeck followed with a double and Foley walked before Barton got Coppock to pop out. Terry hit into an error to score Vorbeck and Foley scored on a Clouse base hit for a 3-0 start by the Redhounds.
Williamsburg closed the gap to 3-1 when Micah Purdie reached on an error then scored on a Powers base hit in the top of the second.
The Yellow Jackets tied the game in the top of the third when Bowlin and Jones scored. Root and Williams had RBI singles in the inning.
Corbin answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Foley led off with a single to left field and Coppock’s hit to center field was misplayed, Foley scored on a passed ball and Coppock scored on a throwing error.
The Redhounds (8-13) added three runs in the home half of the fifth for an 8-4 lead. Vorbeck led off with a single to left field. After Foley struck out, Coppock and Terry hit into errors. Terry’s hit to left field was misplayed allowed Vorbeck and Coppock to score. Terry scored on a sacrifice by Clouse.
Williamsburg refused to quit and rallied in both the sixth and seventh innings. Barton led off the sixth with a single to left field. Bowlin followed with an infield hit before Perkins ground out to second scored Barton.
In the seventh, Williamsburg had runners on second and third when Vorbeck came to the mound and struck out Powers for the save.
Williamsburg is scheduled to return to play Thursday against Campbell County, Tenn. They will be at Richmond Model Saturday to play Cordia and Richmond Model.
Corbin will be at Bell County Thursday before playing in the Admiral Classic in Danville Saturday. They are scheduled to play Danville at 12:30 and Franklin County at 3 p.m.
