Corbin downs South to win eighth CFIT title
The Corbin Redhounds made it two in a row over the South Laurel Cardinals. However, it will not show up in the district standings because it was in the finals of the 22nd Annual Cumberland Falls Invitational at L.U. Gilliam Gym, 70-52.
It was the first time the two teams had played in the finals of the tournament. Coach Steve Wright led the Laurel County Cardinals to the title in 1990. It was the eighth title for the Redhounds with the last being in 2003.
In the early going it was all South Laurel, or should we say all Matt St. John, who scored his team’s first seven points. But the Redhounds came to life and outscored the Cardinals 18-4 in the final seven minutes and took a 18-11 lead into the second period.
It was all Corbin from that point on. The Cards did get within two (18-16) on a Watkins three pointer and a St. John basket to start the period, but another 20-4 run pretty much blew South Laurel out of the gym.
Josh Crawford led the Redhounds in the run with seven points while senior teammate Josh Smith added six to pace the Redhounds to a 38-23 half time score.
