Corbin downs Rockcastle
Heather Clouse and Christina Sutton combined for 30 points as the Corbin Lady Redhounds opened the season with a 60-46 win over the Rockcastle County Lady Rockets Monday night in Mt. Vernon.
Sutton, who had missed the two Corbin scrimmages, scored 12 points in the win. “It was just good to have everybody dressed,” said Corbin coach Jennifer Parsons.
“When you are on the road a win is a win and it’s even better when you are on the road,” said Parsons. “I didn’t think our chemistry was as good as I would have liked to have seen it but due to some injuries that we have had and we got into some early foul trouble.”
Parsons said the foul trouble “took us out of playing some pressure defense and I felt like that let them hang around with us in the second quarter.”
Corbin (1-0) eased out to a 9-6 lead before Sutton nailed three straight three pointers to push the Redhounds lead out to nine, 18-9. Corbin ended the quarter on top, 20-11.
“Those threes kept our offense going,” said Parsons. “We didn’t shoot the ball well at all, especially starting out. We finished with a better percentage in the second half. We had a real hard time getting the ball in the basket in the first half.”
“We had the open looks, but we just couldn’t get it to go through,” she said.
Rockcastle County took advantage of a poor shooting second quarter by outscoring the Lady ‘Hounds, 15-8. Corbin held a narrow 28-26 lead at the half.
With the help of five Mikkah Rogers points and a three-pointer by Sutton, Corbin eased its way out to a 47-36 lead by the end of the third period.
“We made some good defensive stops toward the end of the game,” said Parsons. “I think it pushed the momentum our way.”
“Whether it was first-game jitters or what, we were a little careless with the ball,” Parsons said. “We made some mistakes that were not pressured.”
The Lady Redhounds will host the Whitley County Lady Colonels Friday night in a district-seeded game. “We have to be ready to play,” said Parsons. “It’s a big game for us. It’s the second game of the season and since we are seeding, every game counts even more.”
“Being a home game, we want to get that first game with them early,” said Parsons.
It will be Corbin’s strength on the outside against Whitley County’s strength on the inside.
