Corbin City Utilities warns of phone scam
If you get a call from someone claiming to be from the Corbin City Utilities asking for payment of a late bill, then hang up.
It’s a scam.
The Corbin Police Department has received information that Corbin City Utility customers have received collection calls asking customers to pay their utility bills over the phone using prepaid credit cards and asking for personal information.
“Corbin City Utilities reported that this is a scam and no one from Corbin City Utilities will ever call you asking for personal information or asking you to make a payment over the phone,” the police department said in a release.
Corbin City Utilities General Manager Ron Herd echoed similar sentiments.
“We never call for payment. A good rule of thumb, if anyone calls you don’t give them anything,” Herd said. “We do take payments over the phone but they have to call us.”
Herd said that city utilities also doesn’t call people before disconnecting service.
“The customer will get a late notice in the mail, if they haven’t paid by the 15th of the month. That is all you get from us, something in the mail,” he added. “We never call to ask for payment. We just go out and disconnect and let them come in and pay.”
If anyone has a question regarding payment of a bill, they can call the Corbin City Utilities Commission at 528-4026.
