Corbin candidate forum set for Thursday night
The News Journal and Redhound Productions, the student-run media program at Corbin High School, and the high school Journalism Department will be co-hosting Meet the Candidates – a discussion forum this Thursday at Corbin High School.
The question and answer session with local political candidates will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Corbin High School Auditorium and is free and open to the general public.
“We are doing this to give candidates who do not have the money to run an expensive campaign an opportunity to reach the public with their ideas and convince the voters to cast their ballots for them,” said News Journal Publisher Don Estep, who will serve as forum moderator.
“A better informed public will make better decisions in the voting booth.”
News Journal reporter Trent Knuckles, joined by Corbin High School students Chelsea Evans and Daniel Nobel, will question the candidates about important current issues. Candidates for County Judge-Executive, Corbin City Commission and Corbin Mayor will participate. The forum will be preceded by a meet-and-greet chili supper in the high school’s commons area at 5:30 p.m. Salad, dessert and drink will be provided. Cost for the dinner is $7 for adults and $5 for students. Proceeds from the dinner will go to benefit the Corbin High School girls’ softball team.
Susie Hart, Director of Public Relations for the Corbin Independent School System, said the forum would serve the dual purpose of connecting local students with election process and informing the public.
“Any time our students and our resources can be used in a positive way in the political process, it’s good for the whole community,” Hart said. “We’re excited about the event and hope it helps every voter make a more informed decision when Election Day arrives.”
The entire event will be filmed by Redhound Productions and rebroadcast on New Wave Communications public access Channel 18 on the following dates: Monday, Oct. 30 at 7:00 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 4 at noon; Sunday, Nov. 5 at 3:00 p.m. and Monday, Nov. 6 at noon and 7:00 p.m.
