Corbin boys’, Whitley girls’ soccer teams start season 2-0

The Corbin Redhounds have not missed a beat as they try to recapture the magic of the historic 2020 boys’ soccer season, winning the first two matches by a combined score of 11-4.

Coach Armando Cima’s squad defeated Perry County Central, 8-2 last Tuesday, and then picked up a 3-2 win over Lexington Bryan Station in the FCPS Soccer Showcase on Saturday.

Chesney Jacobs, Gabe Cima and Adrian Pataki each chipped in a goal in Saturday’s victory.

The Redhounds will be looking to keep the early streak alive at home over the next week.

At 6 p.m. Thursday, Corbin will host North Laurel in the home opener.

Madison Southern will come calling at 7 p.m. on Saturday, and the week will wrap up with a visit by 50^th District rival South Laurel beginning at 6 p.m.

Whitley County Colonels

Whitley County picked up its first win of the season in its home opener on Saturday with a 6-0 victory over Garrard County.

Johnny Parra led the Colonels with three goals and an assist, while Canyon Freels added two goals.

Canaan Parsons made 16 saves in goal for the shutout win.

Whitley County is now 1-2 on the season.

The Colonels lost 9-5 in the opener at Danville last Wednesday.

On Thursday, Whitley County dropped a 1-0 decision at Russell County.

Whitley County had a chance to even up its record Tuesday night at Barbourville. The game had not yet been completed as of press time.

The Colonels are scheduled to travel to Pulaski County on Thursday and then will be back in action at home against Southwestern on Tuesday.

Whitley County Lady Colonels

Whitley County has also begun its season 2-0.

The Lady Colonels exploded for eight goals in the opener last Thursday at McCreary Central, led by Autumn Sawyers’ four.

Deserae Haynes and Chelsey Logan each added two goals.

I was pleased with the team’s effort and selfless play at McCreary,” said Coach Kelly Sawyers. “I wanted to see the team’s movement with and without the ball and patience with the build up process before attacking the goal. I feel they executed that with several give and go’s and triangles.”

Sawyers said the early lead gave her the opportunity to make some substitutions and get more players some early playing time.

Lillian Nelson and Zoie Moore combined for eight saves in net, giving up one goal to McCreary Central in the win.

Whitley County was awarded a 1-0 victory over Estill County after Saturday’s home opener was cancelled because of COVID–19.

The Lady Colonels had been scheduled to travel to Middlesboro on Monday night. That game was cancelled as well.

Whitley County is scheduled to return to action Monday night at home against South Laurel

We will have some time to hone in and focus a little more closely on areas that need perfected before our first district seed matchup,” Sawyers said.

Corbin Lady Redhounds

Corbin opened its regular season last Thursday with a 4-0 loss at Boyle County.

The Lady Redhounds were scheduled to host Oneida, Tennessee in the home opener in a game that had not yet been completed as of press time.

Corbin will then go back on the road, traveling to Gatlinburg, Tennessee on Friday to compete in the Smoky Mountain Cup.
