UPDATED: 49th District soccer tournament coverage – Lady Hounds crowned champions
ORIGINAL: On Tuesday, the Corbin boys and girls soccer teams were in action in this year’s 49th District tournament.
At North Laurel, the Lady Hounds faced Oneida Baptist Institute in their first game of the tourney. The Hounds had little trouble, with goals by Kara Grisell, Sarah Fryer and two goals from Abby Baker putting them up 4-0 at the half. They continued to dominate in the second half, with Baker scoring four more goals and Mady Saylor scoring one to give Corbin the 9-0 victory.
After the game, Head Coach Hannah Goins said that she was pleased with her team’s performance, adding that it is a relief to know that they will be headed back to the 13th Region tournament in 2016.
The Lady Hounds will now face the North Laurel Lady Jaguars for this year’s 49th District title. That game is scheduled to take place Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at South Laurel High School. Check back here for more details on that game as they become available.
In the boys bracket, Corbin went into halftime of their game against North Laurel Tuesday with a 1-0 lead. The goal came with just under eight minutes to go in the first half when Trey Cima was able to score off of a free kick.
North came out in the second half and exploded offensively, however, scoring four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead with about 15 minutes remaining in regulation. Cima scored again for the Redhounds on a penalty kick at the 9:28 mark, but that was followed by two more Jaguar goals.
In the end, Corbin saw their season come to a close after a 6-2 loss. They finish 2016 with an overall record of seven wins and nine losses.
UPDATE: On Wednesday, a Nikki Wells goal put the Corbin Lady Hounds up 1-0 early on in their district championship game against North Laurel. Carly Stone got the ball in the net for the Hounds several minutes later, giving Corbin a 2-0 lead going into the half. Abby Baker extended the lead to 3-0 with a goal scored at the 33:30 mark in the second half, but two Lady Jaguar goals put them back in the game with 24:55 remaining.
Wells came through again for the Lady Hounds, scoring on a free kick at 12:00. The defense held, and Corbin went on to become back-to-back 49th District champions with a 4-2 victory.
After the game, Head Coach Hannah Goins, who was chilled to the bone after having a cooler of ice water dumped on her, said that she was very proud of her players for defeating a tough North Laurel squad in order to earn another district title. She admitted that she was nervous when the Lady Jags cut the lead to 3-2, but again, she said that she was proud of her team for being able to remain calm and composed, and eventually come away victorious.
The Corbin girls will now shift their focus to this year’s 13th Region tournament, which they will be hosting at Corbin Primary School beginning next Monday, October 17. Pick up the 10/19 edition of the News Journal for more information.
