Laurel County Sheriff’s Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, the department’s public affairs officer, said deputies charged 26-year old Vanessa Marie Lowe and 33-year-old Christopher Surgener, charging each with seven counts of first-degree forgery.
“They had been picked up Thursday morning on unrelated charges of failing to appear in Laurel District Court. The investigation continued and the charges were filed this afternoon,” Acciardo said.
Acciardo said the checks, which were reported stolen earlier this month, had been used on seven different occasions at four area businesses.
“They knew someone who had stolen the checks from relatives,” Acciardo said when asked how the duo had come to possess them.”
Acciardo said Detectives Kevin Berry and Chris Edwards had secured video surveillance from several of the locations showing the duo using the checks. Through that video, the detectives were able to identify Lowe and Surgener.
“This is probably going to be the end of it due to the timeframe involved,” Acciardo said when asked if additional charges may be filed.
Lowe and Surgener are both being held in the Laurel County Correctional Facility.
