Corbin 7th takes Conference title

The Corbin seventh grade football team captured the Southeast Kentucky Middle School Conference championship Monday night running over Somerset’s Meece Middle School, 30-0 at North Laurel.

The win over the Jumpers allowed Corbin to go undefeated in the regular season and playoffs. Corbin defeated Clay County in the first-round of the conference tournament last week and finished the regular season 10-0.

The Redhounds scored in the first quarter and never looked back in beating the Jumpers. Noah Taylor hit Devyn Sams on a 30-yard pass play to take a 6-0 lead. Corbin added the PAT and led 8-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Somerset threatened to tie the game late in the second quarter, but Corbin’s defense held. Coach Wendell Foley came up with some trickery that resulted in a touchdown.

Maguet went back to punt the ball at the Somerset 38-yard line, but kept the ball and went around the left side for a 62-yard run and into the end zone for a 14-0 lead. A Taylor pass to Jordan Fox pushed the lead at the half to 16-0.

It didn’t take long for Corbin to strike in the third quarter. Less than a minute into the second half, Maguet escaped for a 77-yard run, putting the Redhounds ahead 22-0. Sams added the conversion for a 24-0 margin.

The final touchdown came in the fourth quarter when Taylor again teamed up with Fox on a 20-yard pass into the end zone. The Redhounds failed on a kicking attempt, but led 30-0 with 3:49 left in the game to secure their championship trophy and undefeated regular season.

Corbin will turn attention to the Kentucky Middle School State Tournament, which begins this week.

In the second game of the night, the Corbin eighth grade lost in its bid to upset North Laurel in the championship game, 36-6.
