Colonels lose

The North Laurel Lady Jaguars nosed out the Whitley County Lady Colonels Thursday night, 37-35.
The visitors eased ahead in the game 6-0 on baskets by senior Ali Ray and junior Heather Helton. However, the Lady Colonels came right back and rallied for a 8-7 lead on a Stephanie McCullah basket. North Laurel scored the final bucket of the quarter and led 9-8 at the end of the first period.
The teams managed six points each in the second quarter and went to the dressing room at the half with North Laurel holding a 15-14 advantage.
The Lady Jaguars (9-6) outscored Whitley County 15-10 in the third quarter and expanded its lead to 30-24 heading into the final.
Whitley County (10-9) rallied in the final frame and closed the gap to two points on a Samantha Daugherty basket with :41 left but that was the closest the Lady Colonels could get.
WC drops to Clay
It was a battle of two halves with Clay County winning the first half over Whitley County, 34-17 while the Lady Colonels won the second half 23-13.
It was too little too late for the Lady Colonels as they fell behind 16-8 in the first quarter at Manchester Monday night. The second quarter saw the host Tigers double the score and take a 17-point lead into the dressing room.
Whitley County (10-10) came back ready to play and outscored the Lady Tigers 12-6 behind the play of Stephanie McCullah and Kayla Haynes. The Lady Colonels continued to cut into the Clay County lead in the fourth quarter but couldn’t get over the top to make a serious challenge.
McCullah led the Lady Colonels with 15 points while Haynes tossed in 11 points.
The Lady Colonels will return to action Monday night when they host the Trojans of Cawood. Whitley County will try to break a three-game losing streak.
