Colonels’ Football
The Whitley County Colonels rushed for 452 yards and scored seven touchdowns in a 46-0 rout of Lynn Camp Friday night. Junior Boston Bryant rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns as Whitley County jumped ahead of the Wildcats, 21-0 in the first quarter.
Lynn Camp, suiting up just 20 players, was at a disadvantage right off the bat.
Bryant scored his touchdowns early in the game, putting Whitley County ahead 14-0 within the game’s first four minutes. Bryant scored on a 25-yard run to start the game and senior Seth McCoy added the PAT for a quick, 7-0 lead.
Once the Colonels got the ball back, Bryant on a 16-yard run to push the lead out to 13 points. McCoy added the PAT.
Josh Nichols, who ran for 95 yards, ripped off a run of 34 yards during the drive.
Whitley County (2-3) took a 21-0 lead late in the quarter when Tyler Sears scored from eight yards out following an 80-drive, all of which was on the ground.
The second quarter saw the Colonels add three more touchdowns as Austin Hooper broke loose for a six-yard TD, freshman quarterback Austin Ysidro scored on a 39-yard run and Cody Lewis added a six-yard TD with 1:21 left in the opening half. The Colonels took a 39-0 lead to the locker room.
The Colonels scored one touchdown in the second half and that came on a nine-yard run by Nichols with 8:16 left in the third period. McCoy hit the uprights on the PAT for the final score of 46-0.
Ysidro finished the game with 64 yards on four rushing attempts. The Colonels held the Wildcats to 89 yards rushing.
The Wildcats will have the week off this week and Lynn Camp Coach David Mitchell said he “couldn’t come at a better time.”
“We’ve got to get fundamentally better,” Mitchell said. “We are blowing a lot of assignments and not giving ourselves a chance.”
“I told the team we were going to take these next four games like a four-game season,” Mitchell said. That season will start next Friday night against the Berea Pirates.
Whitley County will return to Colonels’ Field Friday night to take on the Somerset Briar Jumpers. The Jumpers turned the ball over six times last week in a 14-7 loss to Glasgow. It was the second loss in a row for Somerset.
The Jumpers (3-2) are led by quarterbacks Alex Lange and Tanner Gadberry along with running backs/receivers Cam Cheuvront, Bryson Jones, Will Lange and Tevin Slaughter.
The first loss of the season came on the road at Breathitt County where the Bobcats held the high-powered Somerset offense scoreless and limited its passing game to 82 yards on the night.
