Colonel Victory
The Colonels came up with a big win over their rivals the Williamsburg Yello Jackets, 73-38.
The Colonels opened the game with a 23-6 run, hitting 9 of 12 from the floor in the first period while the Yellow Jackets got off to a rough start, hitting only two of their first ten shots.
The Jackets, behind senior Michael McRay, got the Yellow Jackets (1-3) going in the second period and stayed right with the Colonels.
Each team tossed in 15 points and the Colonels led at the half, 38-21.
The second half began much like the opening period with the Colonels going on a bug run. Whitley County scored the first 13 points enroute to a 51-21 lead. Williamsburg was never able to recover.
Sophomore Jordan McCumbers led the way for the Colonels in the run with eight points, two coming from beyond the arc. Jacob Lowrie, a 6-3 freshman, added seven points for Whitley County.
McRay was the game’s leading scorer with 17 points. He was the only Yellow Jacket to score in double figures.
Whitley County was led by McCumbers 15 points and Lowrie with 11 points.
“We have set the tone for our kids,” said Whitley County coach Darrell Guffey. “We have played five games now and three have been in front of big crowds.”
“It’s almost like a tournament atmosphere and our kids are finally starting to respond, really settling down and playing well,” said Guffey.
The Colonels will be in action Thursday against Lynn Camp in the Bowman Classic.
