Whitley County opened pool play with a 15-1 win over the Harlan County Lady Bears, who had entered the tournament with a 7-3 record. The Lady Colonels tagged the Lady Bears with their worst loss of the season.
Senior Leeanna Moses was perfect at the plate, scoring all four times. She had a triple, a single and two walks.
Simbree Sizemore, a senior, scored three runs in the game. She had two hits in four plate appearances and was walked once.
Whitley County took an 8-0 lead in the top of the first and never looked back. Caitlyn Walden took the win giving up just four hits while striking out five batters in four innings of work on the mound.
Whitley Co. 4, Simon Kenton 1: The second game in pool play saw the Lady Colonels down a tough Simon Kenton team that entered the tournament 9-5.
The Lady Colonels didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard, as they had to play the visitors role in the game. Ashley Lindsay drew a walk then stole second. On her attempt to steal third the catcher threw it over the third baseman’s head and Lindsay crossed the plate for a 1-0 lead.
Simon Kenton tied the game in the bottom of the first, but Whitley County answered two innings later. Again it was Lindsay leading off with a walk and stealing second. For the second time in the game she got the catcher to make a throwing error and scored the go-ahead run.
Whitley County added a run in the top of the fourth when Emily Elliott hit a single up the middle. Stephanie Huffman followed with a base hit. Simon Kenton pitcher Courtney Morgan walked Bethany Powers to load the bases. Brooke Hollingsworth drew a four-ball count as well sending Elliott home for a 3-1 lead.
Morgan killed the rally when she struck out Lindsay and got Walden to hit into a fielder’s choice. Huffman was gunned down at the plate. Simbree Sizemore then popped out to second to end the inning.
Moses gave Whitley County an insurance run in the top of the seventh when she led off the inning with a walk. She went to second on a passed ball then scored on an Elliott hit to right center field.
Clay Co. 3, Whitley Co. 0: Whitley County came up empty-handed on the offensive end of the scoreboard against the Lady Tigers of Clay County. Clay County pitcher Amber Hurd allowed only three hits and struck out nine Lady Colonels in the six-inning game.
Whitley County made a threat in the bottom of the second when Dopel hit a one-out single to right field. Dopel went to second on a passed ball but was picked off at third on a fielder’s choice by Elliott. Elliott was left stranded at second when Hurd struck out Huffman.
Simon Kenton 5, Whitley Co. 4: Whitley County met Simon Kenton in single elimination play and this time the Lady Pioneers were ready for the Lady Colonels.
Simon Kenton scored in the top of the first then added two runs in the top of the third for a 3-0 lead.
Whitley County battled back; scoring solo runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings. Lindsay walked with two outs in the third then stole second and third before scoring on a passed ball.
Moses led off the fourth with a base hit. She scored on a RBI single by Elliott.
Down 3-2, Whitley County gave up two crucial runs in the top of the seventh and faced a 5-2 deficit going into the home half of the inning. Lindsay led off with a single and went to second on a passed ball. She moved over to third on a Moses base hit. Moses stole second and the runners were in scoring position.
Simbree Sizemore came up with a two-run single pulling the Lady Colonels within one. Elliott popped out to third to end the game.
Whitley Co. 18, Harlan 2
The Lady Colonels ran all over Harlan Monday night in an 18-2 win in six innings. Whitley County scored seven runs in the home half of the first and never looked back.
Lindsay, Walden, Moses and Dopel all scored three runs each in the win. Walden got the win on the mound scattering five hits and striking out seven batters.
The Lady Colonels are set to host the Corbin Lady Redhounds Thursday. They will take on Jackson County Monday at WCHS.
