City wants Chamber of Commerce to pay $20,000 for NIBROC overtime costs
Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Director Bruce Carpenter came to the Corbin City Commission meeting Monday to discuss a proposal that the chamber help the city cover some of the approximately $20,000 in overtime it pays out to employees during Nibroc.
McBurney said while the figures for 2012 are not in, yet, it has cost the city as much as $27,000 for police, firefighters, public works and parks and recreation employees.
"It averages between $18,000 and $19,000 per year," McBurney said.
While acknowledging the important role the city employees play in making the Nibroc Festival happen, Carpenter said if the chamber has to absorb those costs, it will affect entertainment.
"It is much more than we can take on at the chamber and survive," Carpenter said. "It would mean cutting out a whole day of entertainment."
Carpenter noted Corbin Tourism’s willingness to provide the additional money necessary to book Styx and the economic impact booking more prominent entertainment has in Corbin.
"On one of the downtown merchant’s Facebook pages, the merchant said, ‘The store was packed for three days,’" Carpenter said, noting that particular merchant has not been a staunch supporter of Nibroc in the past.
Carpenter said the chamber uses the proceeds for the work force development and work ethic programs in the schools.
Carpenter asked the commissioners to sit down the chamber’s board members to open the books and see if the two sides can come to an agreement.
"We cannot in any way form or fashion, undertake that obligation," Carpenter said. "I just think for this size event for this community it is very extraordinary to have this type of event for three days that draws this much attention and this many people to our community. It really reaches a lot of people outside the Tri-County area that come and visit."

I sure hope you get the pictures for the walls. I have repeatedly asked about making copies of them because my father was a football player at Lynn Camp as were a couple of his brothers. If you can obtain them, it would be fantastic if you could find out if you can make copies and sell them…. If they are damaged, photoshop is a miracle for that! I’d love to have the chance to repair them 🙂
Also if you can find the ladies who owned the “Little Dixie” on the road to Barbourville..it’s closed now. I don’t know why, the recipe was the original and it was great. I don’t know if people were sceptical or what but it was fantastic!
Good luck to you and will be a regular customer…wish I could do more 🙂
I was a freshman in 1975 at the old Corbin High School on KY street. We would walk downtown to the Dixie or Fad pool hall and get a hot dog & pepsi for 75 cents. When I would eat at the Dixie I always got a chili dog, onion rings and pepsi for 1.00. It was great and filling. I loved that place. When the new high school was built 1976 and a cafeteria went in, it was the beginning of the end of the old Dixie restaurant. I hope they are able to make a good profit and sell good food. I will be a regular customer during the week. Nothing else to do in this one horse town except go to Walmart or similar stores. I don’t drink or smoke or do drugs, the only other entertainment that is worthwhile isn the movies.
Nibroc just had the 60th Anniversary.. They lay off the cop’s Security for a couple week’s before so they have them there for Nibroc.
YEP TIME TO MOVE NIBROC to a different place.
Don’t cut the Band’s I’m a Rock n Roller. And this is something we all look forward to in Aug.
Just start now looking for a place and re-locate Nibroc some place else in Corbin! I can think of 3 places right now you could move it to and it still in Corbin~ Styx Rocked this yr, Peter Rivera Rocked Starship well not so good Liked them better the first time the came here. We really need a old fashion Souther Rock 3 night show’s~ Thank you
Why not come back with a counter offer of 1/2 or 1/3? Offer the employees comp time instead of paying the overtime, and see where they stand. The State Police has been giving comp time for years, or pay them regular time instead of time and a half and then 1-2 days off extra. Why doesn’t the city ask for money/donations from the wealthier people like the Forcht’s, Owens, Nip Joints, etc. It is problems like this that make me want to visit Disney World.
Bruce Carpenter is a fool. (1) He had to file bankruptcy some years back yet; the fact that he is entrusted to handle money or discuss budgets for any organization is absurd. (2) There is no economic growth because of Nibroc. The only merchants who see an increase in sales are those who come and go with Nibroc: the street merchants. Get your head out of the sky Bruce!
Well it sounds like a good time to move NIBROC out of Corbin!!!
