Chili cook off: Corbin firefighters versus Corbin police
Corbin Police Department’s partners in crime, Detective Robby Hodge and Sergeant Bill Rose, will compete go head to head with Corbin Fire Department’s Lt. Mike Neal and firefighter Daryl Thompson to see which team will go out in a blaze of glory at the chili cook off on Feb. 10 to benefit the Carnegie Center of Corbin.
“We have had donors and we have kind of gotten a little stagnant, but there is more work to do,” said Carnegie Center of Corbin board member Maggy Monhollen. “We want to continue to drum up support.”
The cook off will take place in the Depot on Main’s event room. The Depot is one of several sponsors and donated the use of the room for the event.
From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., community members will be able to venture down to the Depot and participate in the chili supper and cast their votes in the chili cook off competition.
Admission for the event is $10, and all proceeds will go to the Carnegie Center of Corbin.
At the chili supper, patrons will receive a bowl of chili and then be able to taste test the chili recipes prepared by the police officers and the firefighters.
“The Corbin Police Department is an awesome bunch of guys,” said Neal, with the Corbin Fire Department. “While they have tried to beat us in basketball (which didn’t work out for them), they want to challenge us in cooking chili. I hope they are used to heat because this is where we turn up the heat on them.”
The police department will not back down from the competition.
“It is no secret there is a healthy competitiveness between the fire and police department, and the fire fighters are a huge asset to the city. However, for this occasion, we look forward to forcing the firefighters off their comfortable couch and out of their comfortable station attire to take a loss at something firefighters are known for.”
At the end of the supper, votes will be tabulated to determine which department had the best chili. The winner will receive a trophy.
The event is being sponsored by Kroger.
