Changing Helmets

Williamsburg football coach Jim Black is changing helmets and school colors. Actually, he is returning to the red, black and white that he once wore when he was an assistant football coach at Whitley County High School.
Black was named the school’s head football coach after the resignation of Roger Gentry, who decided to follow University of Cumberlands coach Chuck King to the state of Georgia.
Black, who was an assistant coach from 1991-2000, under Mike Campbell, is excited to return to Whitley County High School. “First of all, it is an honor and privilege to attain this position and I want to thank all the administration here at Whitley County. It’s a great opportunity that I look forward to.”
“Basically, I can’t wait to get with the kids and get started,” said Black.
“This thing has happen so fast, I am trying to get things going on my end as well,” added Black.
“As far as football wise, for me personally, it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up at this time of my career,” said Black. “It was a difficult decision as far as leaving, but this school has good kids and good players.
“Just like Williamsburg, I think I am coming to a good place with good people,” Black said of his decision to take the Whitley County job.
“The two are similar as far as football goes because if you look at Williamsburg they are at the bottom of Class A as far as size goes and they have to fight bigger schools and Whitley County is at the lower end of the 4A. We will have to play against bigger schools.” said Black.
Is Black planning to open up the offense with more passing? “What do you think?”
“My first priority is meeting the kids, my second priority is trying to determine what type of talent we have and that will dictate what we will try and do,” said Black.
“The good thing we know is that we can run the ball,” he said. “We’ve got to make people defend the pass.”
“Coach Campbell has done a great job establishing Whitley County as a running team,” said Black. “I know when I go out there, our kids can run block, now we just have to go over pass.”
“We are very fortunate and lucky to have somebody that is respected in the coaching field and that I know will do us a job here at Whitley County High School,” said Athletic Director, Mike Campbell. “He lives it night and day and does what it takes to get the job done.”
