Change the Name
The Touchstone Energy All “A” Classic is underway in Richmond this week. The girls got underway Wednesday while the boys will take center stage Friday. I have a suggestion!
Change the name of the tournament to Touchstone Energy “Small School” Classic instead of All “A”. The title now sounds like this tournament is for Class A teams only. If that is the case, then why are there only eight Class A teams in the field. Lyon County, Lexington Christian, Clinton County, Hazard, Calvary Christian, Pineville, Whitefield Academy and Elliott County. The rest are either 2A or 3A schools.
I understand the committee, which is actually made up of mostly Class A school representatives, changed the format to the smallest 125 schools. It’s a smack in the face when teams like Henry County (667), Edmonson County (637) and Louisville Shawnee (615) compete for a Class A title.
I’d really like to see Pineville win this title. The Lions have 181 students and actually the smallest of all 16 schools in the boys tournament. Calvary Christian and Whitefield Academy have a few more students, but they are private schools which is a whole different subject.
The All “A” event is a great ideal and I am behind it 100 percent, but if it’s a true Class A tournament. But, I understand from some of the committee members that money is a big issue to keep it going, so that is why they have let in some of the larger schools. Not all the 2A schools take part, so that is why you have some of the 3A schools in the field.
So, now is the time to change the name to “Small School” Classic.
