Last fall the three high school softball coaches got together and decided to host a softball tournament and what better name came up then Cumberland Falls.
With the football and basketball events becoming such a success the coaches (Gary Akins, Jim Black and David Halcomb) chose to call their tournament the Cumberland Falls Invitational.
They went a step further and made it one of the Kentucky Prep Series tournaments, which will benefit the summer East/West All-Stars and the first ever Kentucky-Tennessee All-Star Games in June.
With that a Player of the Game will be awarded at the conclusion of each game and each team will receive a plaque on behalf of the Kentucky Prep organization for participating in the tournament series. Tournaments are hosted at various sites around the state each year.
Five teamns from the 9th, 10th, 12th, 13th and 15th regions will join Corbin, Whitley County and Williamsburg in the two-day event.
Whitley County coach David Halcomb said, “We wanted to promote the game of softball in our area, so out of a meeting we came up with the first annual Cumberland Falls Softball Classic.”
“I think it is a really good concept and local fans will get a chance to see us play quality teams located from different parts of the state of Kentucky,” he said.
“We have had great support from the community and I would like to thank all of our local corporate sponsors as well as Kentucky Prep Softball that has helped us pull this off,” said Halcomb.
“I encourage everyone to come out and support the team of your choice and help us make this tournament a success. Hopefully, this is something we can continue to do for many years to come,” he said.
Corbin and Whitley County will host first-round pool games with the Lady Colonels hosting Saturday’s championship games.
Corbin will host Bell County, Harrison County and Covington Holmes while Whitley County will host pool one which includes Williamsburg, Rockcastle County and Prestonsburg.
Each team will play and results will determine Saturday’s championship play. The top teams in each poll will play for the championship Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The number two teams will play for third place and the three teams will play for fifth. The last place pool teams will play for seventh place.
