CC takes three
The Cumberland College Patriots evened their conference record at 4-4 by taking three games from arch-rival, Georgetown College over the weekend. The Patriots swept two games Friday beating the Tigers 3-0 and 13-3. Saturday the teams split with Georgetown wining the opener, 8-1 but the Patriots came back to blast the Tigers, 13-2 in the second contest.
The weekend series left the Patriots in fourth place behind Lindsey Wilson (2-0), Campbellsville (6-2) and Lambuth University (5-3). Cumberland will have a chance to move up in the standings this weekend when the Patriots host Lambuth University in double-header games on Friday and Saturday.
Cumberland College played well enough to garner the Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week honors by the Mid-South Conference.
Chris Wood led the Patriots in the four-game series with five home runs, a double and drove in 11 RBI’s. He also had two stolen bases. He was honored with the Player of the Week.
Adam Walker, a transfer from Clemson University, was named the Pitcher of the Week after shutting out the Georgetown College Tigers, 3-0. He scattered five hits and allowed only one walk in the win.
In Saturday’s double-header, the Patriots lost the first game 8-1 as Georgetown ace, Adam Davis shut down the Patriots bats.
The Tigers (12-14) went up 4-0 with a run in the top of the third and three in the fourth before Cumberland got on the scoreboard in the home half of the fourth.
Roman Cox hit a one-out double to rightfield then scored on a Chaz Gentry base hit. The Patriots had two of their three hits in the inning.
Cox accounted for two of three hits in the loss.
The Patriots exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the second and went on to win game two, 13-2 in five innings. Dan Guttridge got things started for Cumberland with a one-out double to centerfield. After Chris Cartas reached on a walk, Cox hit a three-run homer to centerfield on a 0-1 count for a 5-0 lead.
Chaz Gentry followed with a walk off new pitcher, Jamie Anderson. Wood then belted a two-run homer to centerfield as the lead reached seven runs.
Cumberland plated three more runs in the inning for a 10-0 lead.
Guttridge and Cartas scored in the bottom of the first to account for the first two runs of the game.
In Friday’s games, unbeaten Adam Walker put his 2-0 record on the line and came through with flying colors. He limited the Tigers to five hits while the defense posted a shutout over Georgetown College, 3-0.
Cumberland College scored in the bottom of the second when first baseman Tommy Guinn singled to centerfield. He went to second on an infield error by Georgetown first baseman, Bo Eppinghoff.
After catcher Drew Bridewell went down on strikes for the second out, Adam Garrett drew a walk from pitcher Adam Burks. Getting back to the top of the lineup, Guttridge singled to centerfield, driving in Guinn for a 1-0 lead.
Cumberland finally patted its lead in the bottom of the sixth by adding two runs. Gentry led off with a single followed by Burks wild pitch that moved the Cumberland runner to second. Wood hit a single past the Tigers shortstop, Brian Powell.
Burks almost got out of the inning without any runs, but a two-out single by Cartas sent both runners home.
Walker sent all three batters he faced back to the dugout. He struck out Bryan Scott and got Adam Schepis to fly out to right field. Powell grounded out to third to end the game.
The second game of the day, saw the Patriots score in five of six innings to win 13-3 in six.
Georgetown took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first but Cumberland scored two in the bottom of the second for a 2-1 lead. Wood and designated hitter, Aaron Ellis, crossed the plate for the Patriots. Wood reached base on a walk while Ellis made it to first on an infield error. Bridewell produced a two-run single for the lead.
The Tigers added two runs in the top of the third and took a brief 3-2 lead in the game. B. J. Foley tied the game after reaching on a walk then scoring on an error.
The Patriots exploded for 10 runs in the next three innings. Three in the fourth, five in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Guttridge hit a three-run homer in the fifth while Wood finished off the game with a two-run blast in the sixth.
