Campers win
Lynn Camp got a big win over the Evarts Wildcats Friday night on the road, 22-7. The win comes at a good time in the schedule, the ‘Cats will have a week off to prepare for the final three games of the season.
When they return to action, Lynn Camp will face the Cumberland Redskins, Somerset Briar Jumpers and Williamsburg Yellow Jackets in that order. To make the playoffs, Lynn Camp needs to win at least one of those and to get a home field spot they need to win all three.
“We played a little more inspired,” said Lynn Camp coach David Mitchell. “We didn’t execute well, but we played stronger.”
“I thought we played much better on defense,” said Mitchell in holding the Evarts Wildcats to one touchdown and 144 yards.
“We tried to go to the corner more against Evarts, but we didn’t do a very good job of it,” said Mitchell. The Wildcats did get junior Joe Roskopf enough running to score two touchdowns and run for 187 yards on 32 carries.
The first half was a defensive struggle until Mitchell moved seniors Brett Barrett and Brian Slusher to the same side of the ball and the offense began to click. Roskopf went in from three yards out in the second quarter to put his team ahead 6-0. He added the conversion and Lynn Camp was on top at the half 8-7.
Lynn Camp took control of the game in the second half and Roskopf finally got a break away touchdown of 53 yards. Again, he added the two-point conversion for a 16-7 lead. The Lynn Camp defense was tough on Evarts in the second half. In the third quarter alone, Evarts had a minus 12 yards.
The local Wildcats put the game away in the fourth quarter with a time-consuming drive of 57 yards. Kyle Scalf scored for the ‘Cats on a one-yard plunge. Lynn Camp added a two-point conversion but, a penalty on the play wiped out the two points. Jonah Mitchell’s pass was intercepted on the second try for the PAT.
The Wildcats have the week off and plan to work on executing better according to Mitchell. “Hopefully, we can make some improvements in defense because I am sure over the next two or three weeks our pass defense is going to get tested.”
“I don’t know if we have really been tested or not,” said Mitchell. “Even though we are giving up 27 points a game, our defense has played pretty solid all year.”
“After seven games, we have only given up four drives of over 50 yards,” said Mitchell. “We have been hard to score on when we have taken care of the ball.”
“I’m sure our secondary will get a test against Somerset and Williamsburg,” he added.
“Cumberland will be a big game and the way I look at it, if we win, there would be an awful lot of strange things happen for us not to make the playoffs,” said Mitchell.
“Cumberland is an explosive team offensively,” said Mitchell. Cumberland led Harlan at half-time before the Green Dragons came back to win 21-14. The Redskins are 4-2 with a 1-2 mark in district play. They edged Evarts on the road 38-34.
