Bullets Baseball coming
Corbin will have a new baseball team this summer as the Bullets come to Corbin’s House Field. Who are the Bullets?
The Bullets are players from Whitley, Laurel, Knox, McCreary, Pulaski, Wayne and Bell County. They are 16-18 year olds who hope to play college baseball someday.
The Bullets are a Big League Baseball program who won the Kentucky State Championship in 2002, 2003 and 2004 under its Burnside Little League banner.
They have sent players on to Union, Cumberland, Lindsey Wilson, Campbellsville, Berea and St. Catherine Junior College.
So, why am I writing about this team? Because someone (Jim Sadler) is giving the local players a chance to expand on their high school baseball seasons. A chance to be seen by area college coaches and a chance to be signed by those teams.
In order to have a season here in Corbin they need some financial help. “We need to raise about $10,000 to feed, transport, dress and house players,” Sadler said. That’s about $500 per player.
They will have corporate sponsorships available throughout the season. For a $150 sponsorship you will get two season passes (home games only), your name on the back of a t-shirt, your name announced at home games and a banner displaying your name or business.
It will be worth every penny you give those young men. The Bullets will play in tournaments around the state this summer and will be seen by a number of college coaches.
There were several local kids that played on the team last year that almost made it to the Big League World Series. Many of those guys are back including several 2005 News Journal All-Area players.
Andy Greer, John Reynolds and Aaron Root of Williamsburg along with Clint Cashen, Josh Hamlin, Lucas Henson, Travis Prewitt, Brandon Hedrick and Jake McDaniel of Corbin.
Dig deep and help the guys enjoy a great summer of an old tradtion…baseball.
•Corbin’s duo of Jake Mahan and Travis Prewitt plan to stay on the same team for the next four years. The two were scheduled to sign with Georgetown College today on baseball scholarships. Mahan led the Redhounds from his shortstop position while pitching for Corbin in some big games. Prewitt was behind the plate the last several seasons for the Redhounds. I’m sure both will have great career for the Tigers.
•Corbin junior Lucas Henson will play in the Kentucky East-West All-Star Game this weekend at the University of Louisville. Henson will report to Pleasure Ridge Park High School where he will have a workout before reporting to the University of Louisville. The juniors will play a double-header Saturday at 1 p.m. then again at 4 p.m.
•Two Corbin players are playing for the Somerset Twins this summer as well. Seniors Kenny Kysar and Jake Mahan are playing for Gerald Hines’ Somerset team.
•Football and basketball is also in the air. The Tri-County Recreation Football League will begin football sign-ups today at the Corbin Rec Center for players in grades 1-6.
There will be a big basketball camp in town next week as Cameron Mills, a former UK player will be at Corbin High School to conduct a camp. Many people have told me he runs a fantastic, fun camp.
