Breaking Sports: Lynn Camp softball wins first-ever district title Wednesday
With a 16-10 win over Knox Central Wednesday night, the host Lynn Camp Lady Cats became the first team in the history of the program to win a 51st District championship title.
Knox got out to an 8-0 lead after two innings, but the Lady Cats were able to go ahead thanks to a nine-run explosion in the top of the third. They never looked back from there, adding two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, three in the sixth and one more in the seventh inning. The Lady Panthers would put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth before going on to lose by a 6-run deficit.
Lynn Camp was led at the plate by Summer Berry, Kourtnie Mills, Lakylla Medlin and Summar Gregory, who combined for seven hits and nine RBIs in the win. Medlin was the winning pitcher, striking out seven batters on the night.
With a district title in their possession, the Lady Cats will now shift their focus, as will Knox Central, to this year’s 13th Region tournament. The Lady Panthers will play host to the region tourney next week in Barbourville. For coverage, look inside the June 1 edition of the News Journal.
