Knox County man charged with murder following fatal shooting in Gray last week

SMITH
A Knox County man is facing a murder charge following an altercation last week in which he allegedly shot a woman before fleeing the scene.
The shooting occurred just before 5 a.m. at a residence on Dr. Parker Lane in the Gray community. According to a release from Kentucky State Police, a fight broke out between Brian Smith, 40, of Gray, and Shelby McIntyre, 42, of Gray, when Smith allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot McIntyre. Smith then fled the scene.
When police arrived at the scene, McIntyre was found dead inside the residence.
According to an arrest warrant for Smith, a witness near the home told police he “physically saw Smith shoot McIntyre” before leaving the residence.
“Witness stated Brian Smith was arguing and fighting with another female at the residence and then dared someone to say anything to him,” the warrant reads. “Witness stated McIntyre said something and Brian Smith shot her in the head causing her death.”
KSP released information regarding the incident later that day, providing a photo of Smith and a description of the vehicle he was driving in an attempt to get the public’s help in finding him. Smith, who was considered “armed and dangerous,” eluded police for much of the day.
A little after 3 p.m. that day, police were able to make contact with Smith by phone and negotiated with him to turn himself in. He was arrested on KY830 near the Knox/Laurel County line. He was charged with murder and placed in the Knox County Detention Center under a $250,000 cash bond.
Smith is set to appear in Knox District Court on April 25 at 11 a.m. for a preliminary hearing, where a judge will hear testimony and decide whether to send the case on to a Knox County grand jury for possible indictment.
