BREAKING NEWS: POLICE: Man shot at home on 7th Street in Corbin was domestic dispute turned violent
UPDATE: Corbin Police say a man shot during a domestic dispute Thursday, died Friday night.
Corbin Police Detective Rust Hedrick said Steve Pataki’s family contacted him about midnight Saturday to say Pataki had died at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
An autopsy is scheduled for 8 a.m. Sunday in Knoxville.
Hedrick said the investigation is continuing and it has not yet been determined whether Pataki’s wife. Julia, will face criminal charges.
Corbin Police are continuing the investigation but say a shooting Thursday was a domestic dispute that turned violent.
Authorities say Steve Pataki was the victim of the shooting. He was taken by ambulance from the scene for treatment to the football practice field at Corbin High School where a medical helicopter was called to airlift him to the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
Corbin Police Detective Rusty Hedrick, who is investigating the case, said Pataki is in critical but stable condition.
Hedrick said police were called to the scene at 407 Seventh Street at 9:35 a.m. in response to a complaint that a man had been shot.
“She called 911,” Hedrick said of Pataki’s wife, Iulia.
Police were able to interview Steve and Iulia Pataki. Based on the statements and evidence recovered at the scene, Hedrick said it appears the couple had been in an argument during which he threatened to kill her.
“She got scared and ran,” Hedrick said. “She knew where he kept the gun and was able to retrieve it and shot him.”
Hedrick said Steve Pataki was shot three times in the torso with the Highpoint 9-millimeter semi-automatic handgun. The shooting occurred in the dining room area of the home.
Iulia Pataki was not physically injured in the incident. However, Corbin Police Chief David Campbell said she broke down and was taken by ambulance to Baptist Health Corbin as a precaution.
Hedrick said it is yet to be determined whether Iulia Pataki will face any criminal charges.
I have been in contact with the Commonwealth’s Attorney (Alan Trimble),” Hedrick said. “We will work together to determine what, if any, charges she will face.”
A neighbor said the couple was quiet and seemed “nice.”
“I never heard a peep out of them,” the neighbor said.
Hedrick said police are still looking through their records to determine if officers have previously responded to any domestic disturbance complaints at the residence.
Pataki is the owner of Keystone Locksmith in Corbin. The couple is also involved in Brick Station 25, a restaurant on Cumberland Falls Hwy. in south Corbin.
All Corbin Independent Schools were placed on lockdown because of the shooting, but the lockdown was lifted as of 11:00 a.m. Thursday.
