A local state representative who serves all of Whitley County and a portion of Laurel County is in critical condition today after suffering a head injury Tuesday morning.
Dewayne Bunch, 49, a teacher at Whitley County High School, who also serves as 82nd District State Representative in the Kentucky General Assembly, was trying to break up a fight in the cafeteria at the high school Tuesday morning when the incident ocurred. When EMS personnel arrived, Bunch was unresponsive and bleeding from his ears.
Bunch was transported to Baptist Regional Medical Center for treatment. According to Whitley County Schools Superintendent Scott Paul, Bunch was going to be moved to a hospital in Lexington.
"It’s not good. It doesn’t look good," Paul said. "I’m dealing with his family right now. This is a bad situation."
Whitley County High School Resource Officer David Lennon said officials are currently investigating the incident and aren’t sure exactly how Bunch was injured.
"We are in the very early stages of the investigation right now," Lennon said. "We should know more later."
According to Lennon, who also serves as a Deputy for the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department, the students involved in the fight are still at the school and no one has yet been arrested.
A news release from Paul stated the following: "A conflict between two male students early this morning in the Whitley County High School cafeteria resulted in the injury of a teacher. Veteran science and math teacher and State Representative Dewayne Bunch was attempting to break up the altercation when he was injured and taken by ambulance to the Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin, KY. The incident is being investigated by the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department. Further details will follow."
Bunch, a Republican, took office in January after defeating long-time State Rep. Charles Siler in last May’s Primary Election.

I am distraught to hear the tragic news about Representative Dewayne Bunch. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family during this difficult time, and I hope he will be able to recover from this horrific situation. I enjoyed working with Dewayne when the General Assembly was in session and found him to be an excellent advocate for his constituents. This is truly a sad day in the Commonwealth.
What a stuois comment made by the dim wit. Who said who cares. The people of Pleasant View care, They do not care for the dim wit who is clearly a scum ball . Maybe the scum ball should be given a good kick in the A_______
wow, put those two boys on a work farm. That’s what causes good teachers to leave; having to deal with fights, guns, knives, gangs, crack, meth as well as a dozen other things that make our schools unsafe. I teach in Florida and we have the same stuff going on here too. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Bunch and his family.

Thoughts and Prayers going out to Dewayne and his family….
So sorry, to hear about Dewayne, my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and know that he is in the lord’s hands and he can do amazing things, I pray for a speedy recovery for him and comfort for oyur family in during this time……….
As the parent of two teachers, and as a student of human behavior, and as an advocate of teacher control of student behavior and learning, I am appalled at this expression of student behavior, and am extremely concerned about Mr. Bunch, both short-term and long-term.
I think that authorities should “throw the book” at the students involved.
This is a sad event, Teachers all over the Tri-County area have been injured in some form but not to this extreme while trying to stop fights. Last year a teacher in the Tri-County area was assalted by a student later in the day after that teacher broke up a fight that he was involved in and the teacher was knocked unresponsive and was treated for a broken nose and facial lacerations. I hate to say it but, the public school systems have gone to hell because the students have no respect for themself one another or the teachers and no fear of punishment.
God is a great god and is full of hope and mercy. May He heal Rep. Bunch and keep him safe. Thank you Father that he had the courage to intervene between those two boys. May they remember this the rest of their lives and that today’s tragedy be used for God’s glory throughout their lives.

Dear family,
Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. God is still in control, we just have to trust him.
In His Love,
Jack and Doris Cooper
Our thoughts and prayers are with Dwayne and his family along with all of the faculty and students at Whitley County High School! We go to church with his sister in Knoxville, Tennessee…and we are absolutely heartbroken at what has happened!
We have to be reminded that we serve a mighty God…the Jehovah Rapha, the God who Heals You. It is our selfish prayer that He chooses to heal him here on this earth…but regardless, we KNOW that Dwayne will be healed whether it be here with us…or in heaven with Him!!
