BREAKING: Authorities investigating death of two-year-old in Williamsburg
Williamsburg Police and the Whitley County Coroner are conducting an investigation into the death of a two-year-old girl Wednesday afternoon.
According to Williamsburg Police Chief Wayne Bird, the Whitley County 911 Center received the call of an unresponsive child at 81 Highland Park Drive at about 1:40 p.m. The child’s mother made the call.
Bird says the mother told police the child had been diagnosed with pneumonia recently and had apparently recovered. But, she found her daughter apparently unresponsive and not breathing early this afternoon.
The girl was taken to Jellico Community Hospital by Whitley County EMS but could not be resuscitated. She was officially pronounced dead at 2:45 p.m.
Bird said the baby’s body was returned to Kentucky and will be sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort for an autopsy.
"We are in the very early stages of this death investigation. There’s nothing that obviously stands out to us right now, but we are going to cover this pretty thoroughly," Bird said. "Anytime a child dies under circumstances like this, we do our best to find answers."
Bird said the child lived with her mother and her mother’s boyfriend.
