Blaze at CTA Acoustics under investigation
Firefighters from several local departments battled a fire at CTA Acoustics in Corbin Tuesday evening, and the cause of the incident is under investigation.
Corbin Fire Department Battalion Chief Aric Young stated that firefighters were called to the scene at 6:41 p.m. and were on scene within six minutes.
Employees directed firefighters to the back of the building where flames could be seen coming from the roof.
Firefighters said the flames were, in fact, pouring out of the exhaust system.
As one team of firefighters set up the department’s ladder truck, a second team entered the building and knocked down the fire over the oven.
Corbin Fire Chief Barry McDonald asked dispatchers to contact West Knox and Woodbine fire departments to provide additional manpower.
Using the ladder truck, firefighters were able to knock down the flames on the roof and attack the fire pouring from the exhaust stacks.
Young stated that firefighters began cutting open the vent system to gain access to the fire.
As additional off duty firefighters arrived, Young stated a second team entered the building to attack the fires in the oven and the duct system.
After extinguishing the flames, Young stated that smoke was still coming from the duct work. Firefighters began the process of removing smoldering insulation around the duct work and extinguishing it.
“When we finally extinguished the fire we stayed on scene until maintenance was able to restore the sprinkler system,” Young stated, noting the last firefighters cleared the scene at 1:13 a.m.
Officials say no one was injured in the fire.
In addition to Woodbine and West Knox, Laurel County Fire Department responded with its air and lighting truck.
The company says the fire started in an exhaust vent. No word yet how extensive the damage the damage is to the facility, but work wasn’t interrupted as there is a backup line at the other end of the building.
CTA is located in the Southeast Kentucky Regional Business Park off the Corbin Bypass.
