Big Win
The Corbin Lady Redhounds took advantage of five Whitley County errors to win at home Thursday afternoon, 5-0 in a district battle between the two rivals. Whitley County had won eight straight meetings between the teams with their last loss to Corbin coming in the 2001 district tournament.
With six talented freshmen and eighth grader Rachel Akins moving up the varsity, Corbin coach Gary Akins knew his team would be up to the challenge despite losing several players to graduation.
Whitley County, losing only one senior to graduation, knew they would be a region threat as well this year. This game was bound to come down to errors and it was Corbin coming away with the clean slate, no errors in the seven inning contest.
The Lady Colonels (8-4) put the pressure on the host team early in the first inning but Akins’ team didn’t fold. A two-out double by Linda Sawyers to ceterfield in the first inning and a single by Samantha Hundley had runners at second and third when Jessica Fritts struck out.
Corbin (8-1) made a threat of its own in the bottom half of the inning when Ashley Turner led the inning off with a base hit. One out later, Mikka Rogers walked but Hundley was able to strike out Amber Spray and Abby Baylor to get out of the inning.
Corbin’s Felicia Pigg went through the top of the second in order and struck out Paula Powell and Brittany Fox before getting Miranda Archer to ground out.
In the bottom of the inning Corbin struck for three runs. Rachel Akins led off with a double followed by an Ali Burton base hit to leftfield. Hundley then struck out Pigg and got Lampkin to ground out.
However, Turner hit to leftfield where Stella Draper mishandled the rountine fly ball as Akins and Burton scored to put Corbin ahead, 2-0. Turner went to third on a bunt by Soles then Rogers hit into a routine play at short but Sarah Bourland slipped on the wet turf as Turner scored. Spray hit back to the mound to end the Corbin rally.
The teams had runners on in every inning but only Corbin was able to get two more runs across the plate.
In the bottom of fifth, Baylor reached base on an error, stole second then scored on a Akins base hit. In the sixth, Hundley walked Turner then with two outs Rogers and Spray had back to back hits but an outfield throwing error allowed Turner to score.
Whitley County left nine runners stranded in the loss and three in the final inning after loading the bases with two outs.
With one out Fox walked but was out going to second on a Archer fielder’s choice. Bourland and Draper followed with singles only to see Wilson ground out to Rogers at short.
The two teams will meet again May 9 at Whitley County.
