Quarterback Jaxson Stewart looks for someone open in Saturday’s win over Pike Central.
Corbin Middle School took one more step in their goal to win another Kentucky Middle School State Championship when they rolled past the Pike Central Hawks 35-14, Saturday at Campbell Field. This week it is on the regional final where they will take on the Belfry Pirates Saturday at Johnson Central High School.
The Redhounds (12-1) didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard after Drew Carter took the opening kickoff 33 yards to the Pike Central 43-yard line. Expecting the run, Corbin opened the game with a 27-yard pass from Jaxson Stewart to AJ Moore to the visitor’s 16-yard line. Three plays later, Tucker Jewell scored on a two-yard run for the first Corbin touchdown of the day. A pass to Moore on the conversion gave the Redhounds an 8-0 lead.
The Hawks were successful in driving the ball down the field on their first possession and had a first down on the Corbin 14-yard line. The Hawks pushed the ball down to the eight-yard line for a third down, but Moore intercepted Conn’s pass in the end zone.
The Redhounds took over at their own 20-yard line when Jewell broke loose on a 65-yard run to the Pike Central 15-yard line. Stewart then finished off the short drive with a 15-yard keeper for the touchdown. The conversion failed, but the Redhounds led 14-0.
The third Corbin drive ended in a fumble, but the Redhounds held and got the ball back at mid-field when the Hawks fumbled and Corbin recovered with 6:03 left in the second quarter.
Three minutes later Moore had his second touchdown of the game on a 21-yard pass from Stewart. Alec Gambrel booted the extra point for a 21-0 lead.
Carter put the Redhounds ahead 28-0 with :32 left in the quarter on a three-yard run to the end zone. Gambrel’s kick was good on the PAT.
Conn caught the defense off guard on the kickoff and took the ball 85 yards on the kickoff return to get his team on the scoreboard. The conversion failed and the Redhounds went to the dressing room with a 28-6 lead.
Corbin added its final touchdown in the third quarter when Dylan Brock broke loose for a 50-yard run. Gambrel’s kick with 2:42 left pushed the Redhounds ahead, 35-6.
The reserves saw most of the action in the fourth quarter and held the Hawks until the final minute when Conn got away from a 25-yard run to the one-yard line. Josh Ray went the distance on the ensuing play for the score. Conn ran in the conversion with :36 left as Corbin won the game, 35-14.
