Beat the Heat Color Me Pink race set for Aug. 3

Want to help out those fighting cancer and get a little exercise while you are at it?

The start of the 2017 Beat the Heat race.

This year’s Beat the Heat Color Me Pink one-mile race will take place on Friday, Aug. 3. Registration will start at 7 p.m. at Bill Woods Park and the race will begin at 8 p.m. on the Main Street Bridge.

$1,000 in proceeds from the event will go toward purchasing air-conditioners for families in need.

Firestone Industrial Products usually donates that money, said race organizer Jayma Moore.

The remainder of the funds generated from the race will go to benefit the Tri-County Cancer Coalition.

The Tri-County Cancer Coalition was founded in 1999. Its mission is to reduce the incidents of breast, cervical, lung, testicular, prostate, skin and other forms of cancer in Knox, Whitley and Laurel counties.

The coalition provides special services and supplies to cancer patients, such as free wigs, bandanas, turbans, scarfs, lymphedema sleeves, breast prosthesis, bras, transportation funds, and pertinent literature.

There is a $20 entry fee to enter the race.

After the Aug. 3 race, there will be a free movie shown in Bill Woods Park about 9 p.m.
