BB&T Bank closing Corbin branch

A Corbin area bank is closing its doors at the close of business on November 16.

BB&T’s branch on Master Street will be closed as part of what officials describe as a branch reformation.

It will be merged with the BB&T location at 840 Whitley Street in London.

Officials said the decision to close the Corbin location was made in early July.

They cited the change in the way people do their banking, with more happening online as opposed to in person as the driving factor.

“It is the way things are going,” officials stated.

The branch currently has two employees. Both will be transferring to the London location as part of the merger.

BB&T was founded in 1872 as Branch and Hadley, becoming Branch and Company, Bankers in 1887.

What became BB&T was born in 1913 in North Carolina.

Surviving the Great Depression and continuing the grow through the mid 1990’s, a series of mergers into the early 2000’s expanded BB&T into Georgia, South Carolina Tennessee and Kentucky.

The Corbin branch was formerly a branch of Area Bank of Owensboro, which it acquired in 2002.
