Baptist Health Corbin Volunteer Auxiliary offers chance to, ‘Splat out Cancer’

Baptist Health Corbin’s Volunteer Auxiliary held a fundraiser Thursday to benefit its efforts to aid patients receiving cancer treatment at the hospital, providing them with the opportunity to, “Splat out Cancer.”

The Baptist Health Corbin Volunteer Auxiliary offered hospital employees the opportunity to help “Splat out Cancer’ Thursday. Employees were able to purchase paint-filled balloon which they could sling shot into this sheet. The resulting artwork will soon be on display at the hospital. The auxiliary raised more than $1,250 between the balloons and lunch tickets that were available to purchase.

For $1, individuals had the chance to sling shot balloons filled with paint at a sheet attached to a wooden frame.

Baptist Health Corbin Marketing, Public Relations, and Volunteer Auxiliary Assistant Director Becky Stewart said between the balloons, and the lunch available to employees, $1,252 was raised Thursday.

“One of our volunteer projects is to assist cancer patients,” Stewart said explaining the proceeds will be used to purchase gas cards to help patients cover their transportation costs as they undergo treatment.

“We do a number of fundraisers for our employees throughout the year such as a uniform sale and a book sale,” Stewart said.

As to what will become of the “art project,” Stewart said that remains up in the air.

“We are wanting to keep it and display it somewhere,” she said.

Though this is the first time for the balloon art, Stewart said hospital officials will looking for other opportunities to give the public the chance to, “Splat out Cancer.”

“We have the frame, so it is just a matter of getting the two sheets sewn together and attaching them to it,” Stewart explained noting that anyone holding an event where there is sufficient space may contact her or Marketing and Public Relations Director Debbie Hardin, 523-8547.

“We used water-based paint, so it will wash off of any surface,” Stewart said.

Anyone that would like to donate to the volunteer auxiliary to help the cancer patients may contact the auxiliary at 523-8768.

“Donors can earmark their donations to go to the fund for the cancer patients,” Stewart said.
