Band of Heathens bringing unique brand of rock to NIBROC stage
Of the many talented bands who are set to perform live at the 2023 NIBROC Festival in downtown Corbin, Band of Heathens certainly stands out in terms of their unique look and feel. Their sound, which is an eclectic mix of rock, blues, country, and even a little bluegrass, has earned them widespread notoriety, and a following that includes fans from all over the globe.
“I would describe us as a classic American rock-and-roll band,” said Ed Jurdi, who plays guitar and performs vocals for the group. “We incorporate a lot of different influences into our music, and a lot of what we do is about playing live, and cultivating that live experience.”
Jurdi explained that Band of Heathens formed in Austin, Texas in 2005 when a small group of songwriters who were in each other’s orbit decided to come together and collaborate.
Focusing on improvisation and spontaneity, the group quickly made a name for themselves, going on the road and doing shows all over the country. They have performed on foreign soil as well, crossing the pond to entertain fans in Europe on multiple occasions.
Accompanying Jurdi is Gordy Quist (guitar and vocals), Trevor Nealon (keys), Clint Simmons (drums) and Nick Jay (bass). Together, as Band of Heathens, these artists pride themselves on funneling their collective efforts into making good music first and foremost, with everything else coming after.
“The vision is to write great songs, make great records, and play great shows,” Jurdi said. “It is all about promoting the music first, with everything else being done in support of that.”
The band has many songs that have remained popular with their ever-growing fanbase, all of which can be sampled anywhere that music is streamed online. As for what to expect if you have never listened to Band of Heathens, Jurdi explained that they like to offer “a little something for everyone” if they can.
“It is going to be fun to play a show outside in the summer,” Jurdi said when asked about the upcoming show at NIBROC. “It will be a good opportunity to get together and have a good time.”
“Music is a great uniter in a time when people aren’t really able to agree on many things. I think this will be a chance to connect with many of our old fans, and hopefully make some new ones as well.”
Band of Heathens is set to take the stage on Friday evening, Aug. 11, at 9:30 p.m., following a live performance by Paint Creek. To learn more about the band, and to listen to some of their songs, visit them online at www.bandofheathens.com.
