Authorities warn of possible local phone scam
Laurel County Sheriff John Root is warning of a possible phone scam in which the caller is attempting to get residents to divulge their social security numbers.
According to Public Affairs Officer Gilbert Acciardo a complaint came into the sheriff’s office Wednesday about one such phone call.
The resident told police the caller said he/she was with a local phone company and was trying to collect an overdue bill of $60. The caller then read off the last four digits of a social security number and when the resident said that was incorrect, the caller tried to get the resident to give out the correct numbers
"We advise citizens to not give out any personally identifiable information to unknown phone callers," Acciardo said.
Anyone who receives a similar call is asked to contact the Laurel County Sheriff’s Department, 606-864-6600.
