Arizona man injured in motorcycle crash on KY 92W
An Arizona man is lucky to be alive after a motorcycle crash on Ky. 92W early Monday evening.
Terry Michael Grimson of Sunset West, was riding west towards McCreary County on a custom built Donnie Smith motorcycle with his friend, John Christianson, when the wreck occurred near the 5.5-mile marker shortly before 6 p.m.
"We came around the corner and there were two fist-sized rocks," Christianson said. "I went between them and he must have hit one of them and knocked the front end out."
"My heart is still pounding. It hasn’t slowed down yet. I didn’t know if he would be alive. He is lucky big time."
Whitley County Constable Jim Thornton said that Grimson hit the embankment when the cycle crashed and suffered a compound fracture to his leg in addition to a cut to his head.
Whitley County EMS treated Grimson at the scene and transported him to an emergency landing zone that the Williamsburg Fire Department set up behind the Kentucky Splash Waterpark.
Air Evac Lifeteam landed an emergency medical helicopter there and flew him to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.
Christianson said the two were headed back to Minneapolis where he lived and were in day eight or nine of a trip around the country.
"He broke down for three days and just caught up with me today," Christianson said. "We rode again for a few hours and he went down again."
Thornton is investigating the crash and was assisted at the scene by Whitley County Sheriff’s Deputy Ben Hodge and members of 3-Point Volunteer Fire Department.
