Angela Steuer-Singleton named new head coach of Whitley County softball
On Thursday, Angela Singleton (formerly Angela Steuer) was named as the newest head coach of the Whitley County Lady Colonels softball program.
Singleton, a seventh grade math teacher at Whitley County Middle School, served as an assistant on the Lady Colonels’ staff during the 2016 season. She is a graduate of the University of the Cumberlands, where she pitched and played right field for the Patriots from 2008-2012. She served one year as a graduate assistant at UC prior to beginning work in the Whitley County school system. She is originally from Miamisburg, OH where she played high school and travel ball.
“I’m very excited,” Singleton said of becoming a first-time head coach. “We have a great group of girls, and I believe that they are ready to put in the time and dedication to get to where we want to be. Principal Bob Lawson always talks about the brand he wants for our district and our sports programs, and I think that these girls are ready to do that.”
When asked what the reception has been like among the team since she came on board earlier this year, Singleton said, “We all get along really well. They understand that I’ve played softball myself, and I know what it takes to get to the next level. We have several girls who I think want to get to that next level.”
Singleton says that she plans on trying to meet with her players once or twice a week moving forward in order to work on fundamental skills. “That foundation is where everything comes from,” she explained. “We are going to go back to working on the basics. A lot of confidence comes from having a solid understanding of those basic skills. They may not be the most fun to work on, but it’s where we need to start. You don’t want a weak foundation, and then try to put too much on top of that.”
Singleton also said that she is planning on working closely with the Whitley Middle School and youth league programs in hopes of further strengthening that foundation for future seasons.
Singleton is taking over a Lady Colonels team that went 6-20 last season under the guidance of former Head Coach Todd Lawson. Lawson led Whitley to a 13-10 season in 2015. 2017 will mark ten years since the Colonels have made an appearance in the 13th Region championship tournament. Their last district championship came in 2004.
