All-Star Action
Corbin’s Felicia Pigg and Whitley County’s Annie Wilson will get to see their softball season extended when they play in the Kentucky East-West All Star Series this weekend in Lexington.
Pigg, the Lady Redhounds’ ace on the mound is the first ever from Corbin to play in the 10th Annual East-West All-Star Game. Pigg finished her junior year with a 18-9 record, 2.19 ERA leading the Lady Redhounds to the 13th Region Tournament semifinals before losing to Middlesboro.
Pigg had 162 strikeouts and walked 60 batters on the season.
“Felicia is one of those kids, the more she pitches, the better she gets,” said Corbin coach Gary Akins. “She was really strong in the fourth game of the Cumberland Falls Invitational.”
“She has a pretty good vareity of pitches and when she is mentally set to pitch she is very tough,” said Akins.
Whitley County catcher, Annie Wilson becomes the third Lady Colonel to play in the East-West All-Star Games. Wilson was strong at the plate for the Lady Colonels this season. She finished the year with a .525 batting average and a slugging average of .738. Her on-base average was .629.
She led the team with 26 singles and 15 doubles. Wilson scored 34 runs and had 30 RBI’s on the season.
“This is a terrific honor for Annie to be selected by the coaches to play in the junior all-star game,” said Whitley County coach David Halcomb. “It’s good to ss that people are starting to recognize what a talented softball player Annie has become.”
“To end the season with a .525 batting average is incredible. Out of the 31 games we played this season, she only went hitless in six of them,” said Halcomb. “One of the most impressive thing with Annie, is she’s capable of hitting any type pitcher – fast, slow, lefty, it doesn’t matter.”
“Defensively, she’s about as good as any catcher I’ve seen in this part of the state,” said Halcomb. “She has excellent arm speed and she’s hard-nosed. She’ll do whatever it takes to make a play.”
“Annie will make a nice collegiate player,” said Halcomb. “I hope she has a good time this weekend and I’m sure she’ll represent Whitley County High School very well.”
The Kentucky Coaches Association which sponsors the all-star weekend came out with their all-state team Monday. Wilson was selected Honorable Mention All-State on the Class AAA Team. To be considered for honorable mention a player had to receive a minium ten votes.
