AIR ATTACK IS BACK
When the 2004 football season ended last year, the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets were one of the top scoring machines in the state. Even with 13 seniors departed, the Yellow Jackets started where they left off…putting points on the scoreboard.
Williamsburg opened the season Friday night with a 48-14 pasting of the Jellico Blue Devils. The Jackets put more than half of those points on the scoreboard in the first quarter, 29 points to be exact.
Junior quarterback Thomas Frazier hooked up with junior Chase Hamblin to score the first TD of the 2005 season on a 24 yard pass play at the 7:21 mark. Junior Tommy Helbig ran in the extra point and the Jackets were on top, 8-0.
The second possession by Jellico turned into a Williamsburg touchdown when junior Charlie Bryant blocked a punt then picked up the ball at the 16 yard line and went into the end zone untouched.
The Jackets didn’t stop there, after pushing the Blue Devils from the 23 yard line back to the 17 yard marker, Jellico was forced to punt just outside its own end zone. The Jackets took over at the Jellico 43 and went the distance in just five plays. A Helbig run of eight yards and a 23 yard scamper by Frazier gave the Jackets a first down at the 12 yard line. Frazier missed on a passing attempt to Hamblin but Helbig got the call on the next down and went into the end zone for a 21-0 lead. Hamblin’s attempt at the PAT failed.
The kickoff was fumbled by Jellico, with Moses recovering for the Jackets. It took one play for Frazier to connect with Hamblin for a 29 yard pass into the end zone giving Williamsburg a 27-0 lead. Frazier ran in the conversion and the Jackets led 29-0 with 1:58 still in the first quarter.
The first series of the second quarter was just as successful for Williamsburg. But the Jackets did have to work a little harder for their fifth straight touchdown. A Jellico punt to the 21 yard line left Williamsburg 79 yards from pay dirt.
Helbig picked up a first down with an 11 yard run to the 32 yard line but the Jackets were eight yards short after being set back on a penalty and a short pass to Hamblin. However on third and eight from the 35, Frazier went back to pass but found his receivers covered. He scrambled his way to midfield for a first down and kept the drive going.
He connected with junior Stephen McCullah on a pass play to the 18 yard line on the ensuing play and the Jackets were in the red zone once again. A penalty pushed the ball back to the 23 yard line but Frazier teamed up with Hamblin for the third time for a score with 9:52 in the quarter. The PAT failed but the Jackets led 35-0.
Jellico got on the scoreboard with a big play late in the second quarter when freshman Corey Brown broke loose down the side for a 61 yard TD run. Junior Ricky Carr ran in the extra points and the gap was 35-8.
Williamsburg had a freshman of its own who wanted to make a big play touchdown and nearly did when Aaron Brock took the Jellico kickoff down to the 25 yard line. His 60 yard return gave the Jackets a first down inside one minute in the half.
A Frazier to Hamblin pass went for yet another score with :40 remaining. The PAT failed but Williamsburg owned a 41-8 lead.
“I thought we did a pretty good job in the first half and start of the second,” said Williamsburg coach Jim Black.
“We were able to get everybody in the game,” said Black.
“We started off the game the way we wanted to,’ said Black. “We set the tempo of the game and that’s what we want to do. We made plays the way we wanted to and caused some fumbles and got them. That’s one thing I was hoping we would do.”
“We got some tackles for losses,” said Black. Jellico had ten carries for losses in the first half and ended the half with just 24 yards rushing.
“Overall, I am real pleased with the performance,” he added. “We’ve got to look at film to see where our mistakes were. Our kids got out there and played hard.”
“Jellico didn’t quit,” said Black. “You’re down 40 points and they were still out there fighting. You have to take your hat off to them. It would have been easy for them to fold the tent and pack it in.”
It was Williamsburg coming out of the half with another touchdown to go ahead 48-8. The Jackets started at their own 44 yard line and drove the ball down the field with ease. Helbig’s first carry resulted in 21 yards followed by a Frazier run to the 21 yard line.
Helbig then got the ball inside the nine yard line but a penalty pushed the ball back to the 24.
Frazier hit McCullah with a 13 yard pass to the 11 yard line and Helbig finished it off with a run into the end zone at the 8:40 mark. Hamblin’s kick made it 48-8.
The Jackets gave up their second TD with :22 left in the third quarter when senior quarterback Dustin Buckner scored on a one-yard run. The big play in the drive came from Buckner as well. Facing a third and 20 from their own 49 yard line, the senior back broke loose for a 24 yard run and first down at the Williamsburg 27. Eight plays later he took it in for the second.
Williamsburg will host the Raiders of McCreary Central Friday night in the annual Alumni Bowl. The Raiders are 0-2 with losses to Pineville (17-12) and Oneida High School (27-0). It will be the third road game for coach Jack Arthur and his Raiders football team.
“We still need to work on some special teams play,” said Black. “We need to work on some other receivers and develop some other weapons.”
“They are an improved ball club,” added Black. “They have a nice fullback who runs the ball hard. They are big like usual and more physical. They are a little bit more skilled than last year and a year better.”
