Air Attack
The Air Jackets express rolled on once more last week as Williamsburg shut-out the McCreary Central Raiders, 34-0 behind the play of junior quarterback Thomas Frazier. Frazier hit on 13 of 23 passes for 305 yards, nine of those to teammate Chase Hamblin for 221 yards and three touchdowns.
“I think we’re improving each week,” said coach Jim Black. “Our defense looked a little better. Our line handled their blitz much better in the second half.”
Defensively, Aaron Root led the Jackets with 10 tackles and four assists in the lopsided win over the Raiders. A.J. Jusino and Andrew Middleton also drew praise from Black.
Williamsburg (2-0) didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard as the Jackets took the ball from their own 13 and drove it down the field on the Raiders. Hamblin was on the end of two 15 yard passes, the second got Jackets to their own 45 yard line.
A holding penalty pushed the ball back to the 35 yard line where Frazier broke loose for a 65 yard touchdown, but it was called back because of a holding penalty. Two plays later Hamblin connected with Helbig and the junior back went into the end zone untouched. Hamblin added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
The Raiders didn’t keep the ball long as Charlie Bryant recovered a fumble and put the Jackets back on offense. Two plays later, Frazier and Hamblin struck for a 48 yard TD. The extra point made it 14-0.
In the second quarter Williamsburg made it 21-0 on a 26 yard pass play from Frazier to Hamblin with 8:50 left in the second period.
McCreary Central was unable to move the ball on the Jackets and was forced to punt with 4:45 left in the half. The low punt was blocked by Bryant and Hamblin was there to pick up the ball and go in for his third touchdown of the night. His extra point made it 28-0.
Again the defense made the Raiders pay when the ball was knocked loose and Josh Abrams landed on the loose ball at midfield.
The Jackets looked to be ready for yet another score after Frazier hit Hamblin for a 32 yard gain to the Raiders 18 yard line. Facing a third and 10, Frazier broke through the line for a touchdown, but again it was called back and the Jackets were sent back to the 28 yard line for third down. The Raiders held on the next two downs and kept Williamsburg out of the end zone.
After holding the Raiders to just six yards in the first drive of the second half, Williamsburg got the ball at the McCreary Central 49. A loss on a fumble recovery and a penalty pushed the ball back to the Williamsburg 35 by fourth down. The Jackets attempted to punt the ball away but a roughing the kicker gave Williamsburg new life at the Raiders 45.
A carry by Bryant and two by Helbig gave the Jackets a first down at the 34 yard line. That’s where Frazier and Hamblin teamed up for the final score of the game with 4:56 left to play. The extra point failed but the Jackets held a huge lead in the game.
Williamsburg had two more opportunities to score but missed on one midway through the fourth quarter then ran out the clock on the second attempt at the six yard line.
The Jackets may get their first big test of the season when they travel to Oneida, Tennessee Friday night and take on a 2-1 football team.
“They lost to Coalfield last week, who is a pretty good football team,” said Black. “Oneida is big, strong and fast. We definitely step up in competition this week.”
