After a year and a half on the run, shooting suspect surrenders to authorities

A Corbin man, who has been wanted by police since a 2012 shooting incident and chase, has surrendered to authorities.
Jailer Ken Mobley said that Carl Wayne Scalf turned himself in to authorities at the Whitley County Detention Center about 3:10 p.m. Monday where Jail Capt. Barry Strunk served him with an arrest warrant.
The incident happened on June 2, 2012 when Scalf allegedly fired multiple shots at Henderson Leon Day and then chased after him in his car and tried to run him off the road in an attempt to kill him, according to his indictment.
The incident allegedly began about 9:50 p.m. when Day, a Corbin resident, went to the residence of his ex-wife on Oak Grove School Road to visit his grandchildren, police said.
Sheriff Colan Harrell said that Scalf, the woman’s new boyfriend, told Day to leave.
As Day returned to his vehicle, Scalf allegedly fired five shots at Day hitting the front windshield, hood and driver’s side off of his vehicle.
"According to the victim, there was not an argument between them," Harrell said. "Scalf came in and told him to leave. Day was accommodating him and as he was leaving the shots started flying."
Day had gone to the residence multiple times in the past to see the grandchildren without incident," Harrell added.
Day fled the scene but Scalf allegedly gave chase in his vehicle, catching up and hitting Day’s vehicle multiple times.
When the two men reached Corbin, Harrell stated that Day pulled into an area parking lot while Scalf continued on.
Authorities have apparently been looking for Scalf since then.
On July 9, 2012, a Whitley County Grand Jury indicted Scalf, 48, of 672 Powers Lane, for criminal attempt to commit murder and first-degree wanton endangerment.
According to circuit court computer records, Scalf hasn’t been served with the arrest warrant stemming from his indictment until now.
No arraignment date has been set.
