Lady Hounds soccer team gets win over Southwestern in season opener Monday

Sophomore Mady Thompson scored the only goal of the game Monday when the Corbin Lady Redhounds hosted Southwestern Pulaski in their 2014 season opener.

Monday evening the Lady Redhounds soccer team opened their season at Corbin Primary School when they hosted Southwestern Pulaski.

The Lady Warriors provided a solid test for Corbin in their first real action of 2014, but in the end the Hounds were able to pull out a 1-0 win, getting what fans hope will be a very successful season off on the right foot.

Redhound goal keeper, senior Meghann Blackburn, came up big for her team at the net with numerous clutch saves throughout the contest, but Southwestern’s goal keeper was equally impressive. Corbin had a chance to take the lead in the first half with a penalty kick, but it was blocked. The Warriors got a chance at a penalty kick of their own a little earlier in the half, but that was missed.

There was a couple of scary moments in the second half for the Corbin ladies, with Southwestern narrowly missing a couple of goals, including one miss with only seconds left that would have tied the game.

The Hounds also had some missed opportunities, including a shot by freshman Tristan Gibbs that sailed over the goal, and what appeared to be a score made by Nikki Wells was waived off due to a foul that had occurred seconds earlier.

The goal that won the game for Corbin came with 22:55 left on the clock, when sophomore Mady Thompson saw an opening and made the most of it. She threatened again a few minutes later, but was unable to get the ball back in the net.

Her one score was enough to get the job done though, and Head Coach Erik Steely was happy to get the win to start off the season. “The girls did well,” he said. “I do think we looked a little bit rusty. Our passing wasn’t as fluid as it could be, but it’s the beginning of the year and this is a win that we can build upon. We had some things that we had to overcome in the game, so my hat’s off to the girls. They demonstrated a lot of character, but moving forward we definitely have to tighten our play up a little bit.”
