Bena Mae Seivers: I’ve fallen and I can’t get up
The voice was from my life alert monitor and I did indeed need help. I was lying on the floor, half in and half out of conciousness, taking inventory of all my limbs to ascertain if any of them had been broken.
I had spent a sleepless night with chest pains that wouldn’t go away. Thinking the pains were from my heart–I had had a heart attack two years earlier, naturally that was the first thing I thought was wrong.
So when I woke up I took one of those tiny little pills for angina which I kept handy at all times. It didn’t work, so in 10 minutes I took another–as directed on the bottle. I turned around twice and the room started spinning. Before I knew it KERPLUNK! I was lying on the hardwood floor, feeling nauseous and slightly incoherent, but not incoherent enough to realize I had hit my forehead….HARD. My right eye was closed and a large pump knot had begun to swell across my forehead.
I was wearing my Life Alert necklace and as soon as I hit the floor, it set off the sensor to the Life Alert monitor without my even having to push a button. Immediately, the people at the monitoring station reacted to the alarm and asked if I needed help.
To make a long story short, the folks at the monitoring station alerted the EMT’s and my son who were there in minutes. I managed to crawl to the door to let them in. The ambulance took me to the hospital where members of the ER were waiting for me.
After a series of tests…MRI’s, Sonograms, Cat Scans, and other xrays I can’t pronounce, it was determined that my heart, head, and lungs were okay, that I had pneumonia of all things. After 3 days they let me come home, looking like Rocky Raccoon…two huge black eyes that are slowly going away.
I’m fine now, but it occurs to me that many people who live alone, regardless of age, could benefit from my experience. You never know when the slightest accident can leave you vulnerable and can’t get to the phone. I have a friend who laid in the floor for 3 days, desperately waiting for help.
My Life Alert button is my security blanket. I wear it all the time. It even works if you are going to your car and fall or have an accident. So I implore you, check this wonderful service out. It is also a great burglar alarm in case you hear a noise you can’t identify. The monitor’s voice can be heard a block away and can scare the beJesus out of a would-be burglar. Stay safe, my friend.
3 Ingredient Cobbler
Ingredients:
20-24 ozs. frozen fruit of your choice – I used blueberries. Do not thaw!
1 boxed white cake mix – do not prepare the cake mix. Just use it as is.
12 ozs. seltzer (carbonated water) – I used berry flavored, but use what you like, even plain.
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Place frozen fruit (do not thaw) evenly in the bottom of a 9×13 baking pan.
In a medium sized bowl, lightly mix together the powdered cake mix and seltzer.
Pour over the frozen fruit and bake uncovered on center rack for about 55-60 minutes or until golden brown.
Serve warm. Goes great with a scoop of ice cream on top.
Serves 9-12 people
