Your Corbin Middle School Redhounds are state champions – again!
The same group who dominated the seventh grade division a year ago, going undefeated en route to a state championship win, has done the same thing this year, once again achieving a perfect record, and earning an eighth grade Division 1 state championship in the process.
The CMS Hounds defeated Bowling Green, whom they beat last year in the finals of the seventh grade playoffs, by a score of 36-16 on Saturday to earn a spot in Sunday’s 2014 eighth grade championship game against Meade County.
The Green Wave was no match for Head Coach Brent Jackson’s Redhounds though, as Corbin would win easily, 42-8.
The Redhound defensive unit played outstanding, forcing a turnover on downs near midfield to start the game. The offense turned that into points a few plays later when Devyn Sams ran in a touchdown from 36-yards-out with 3:38 left in the first quarter. Cameron Maguet added on the two-point conversion to give Corbin the 8-0 lead.
Another turnover on downs was followed by more points when Sams found the end zone again, this time on a 6-yard run with 40 ticks left in the quarter to push the Redhound lead to 14-0.
The second quarter started off with Corbin’s Brendan Hennegar sacking the Meade County quarterback, sending the ball flying into the air. Lucas Henegar snagged it and ran about 15-20 yards to pay dirt, and after quarterback Noah Taylor ran in the two-point conversion the Hounds had jumped out to a 22-0 lead with 7:50 left in the half.
Two back-to-back QB sacks by the Henegar boys put the Green Wave at their own eight-yard-line on third and long. Sams then came up with an interception near midfield, giving Corbin the ball back and allowing them to further extend their lead after a Taylor to Lucas Henegar touchdown pass and a Maguet extra point kick with 5:42 remaining in the half. That made the score 29-0.
After another forced turnover thanks to the dominant defensive unit, Lucas Henegar crossed the goal line on a two-yard scoring run with 2:59 on the clock. Another Maguet PAT made it 36-0 and put the mercy rule into effect, meaning the clock would continue to run until the end of the game.
Maguet scored on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter via a 60-yard TD run at the 6:52 mark. The conversion was no good, making it 42-0.
Meade County was able to avoid the shutout, scoring with under a minute left in regulation, but from the beginning of the contest Corbin’s eventual championship victory was never really in doubt.
“This has been an unbelievable experience for our kids,” said Coach Jackson after the win. “I’m so proud of them, and I’m proud of our coaching staff as well. I can’t say enough about everything they do, and I also can’t say enough about the community and all they have done to support us.”
As for his players who will now be going on to play at the high school level, Jackson said, “We try to pride ourselves on being a true feeder program, and I can’t wait to see what these guys can do on the Redhound football field for the next four years. There are good things to come for Redhound football, that’s for sure.”
Corbin High School Head Coach Justin Haddix said of his future Hounds, “This team hasn’t lost a game, so they obviously know how to win. This is a great group of players, and I’m very excited to have them coming to the high school next year.”

What a stupid, idiotic comment by Jacket.
I am very proud of this years Redhounds. I don’t understand why they will not play Williamsburg a 1A team. I was told Williamsburg offered Corbin $1,000.00 plus half the gate. Why would such a great 3A team not play the Jackets. Please somebody let me know if this is true. Thanks
