New song written by Josh Brock and performed by Rye Davis released in time for Father’s Day
Most folks in the local area know Josh Brock as the owner and operator of Austin City Saloon in downtown Corbin. Many also know him from his days dominating the competition on the basketball court as a Corbin Redhound in the late nineties.
But, after two decades of songwriting, the artist, businessman and former athlete is adding another accomplishment to the list by collaborating with several regional musicians on a project that will include over twenty original songs.
“The actual project will be 22 songs that I wrote,” Brock explained. “These will be released on three vinyl records that will include a picture book with all of the lyrics.”
“That part could be several months away, though, so leading up to it we are going to try to release one single every month, beginning with ‘Dear Son.’”
‘Dear Son,’ which was a late addition to the overall project, is a song that was written for Brock’s infant son, Lincoln Woodrow Brock. As it turns out, Rye Davis, the Kentucky-based singer who is performing the song, has also found special meaning in it.
“It’s funny,” Brock said. “We didn’t even realize this until later, but Rye also had a son who was born on the same day as mine, on October 10, 2022. I wrote the song, he’s performing it, and everything just kind of came together.”
The subject matter of the songs will range from joyous occasions, such as the birth of a child, to events that led to heartbreak, such as the ending of a relationship. There will also be songs that carry extra-special sentimental meaning, including the song that Brock wrote for he and his wife, Olivia, to dance to at their wedding.
Brock says that he is very excited to be working with a long list of artists that are well known in our region to bring this project to fruition, including many that have been on stage at Austin City Saloon in the past. One in particular, George Molton, will be cutting three songs.
“When I first started at Austin City as a bouncer at the Lexington location back in 2001, there would be 400 people inside the bar, watching him and singing his songs,” Brock said of Molton. “He just captivated me, and I knew at that point that I wanted to be a part of Austin City long-term.”
“It took some time for me to ask if he would want to cut a song on this album,” Brock continued. “As it turns out, he’s cutting three. One is kind of an ode to Austin City. It’s kind of a love song to a bar, and it’s just him, performing on stage at the original Austin City in Lexington.”
Brock is encouraging music fans to check out his website, found online at www.joshbrockmusic.com, to get more info on this project.
‘Dear Son’ can be downloaded now anywhere streaming music is available, and details will be coming soon on the release of the next single.
