Jackets fall at South Laurel Thursday
The 50th District was on display in London Thursday night when the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets traveled to face off with the the South Laurel Cardinals.
The game got off to a bit of a slow start, but at the end of one period of play the Jackets led 11-9. The score was tied at 13-13 with about six minutes remaining before the half, and a few minutes later Williamsburg was able to take their largest lead of the night, 21-15. They led 26-21 at the half.
The score was tied again with five minutes left in the third period, this time 28-28, but South took the 31-28 lead after a three-point basket from sophomore Jared Grubb. Senior Skyler Griffith responded for the Yellow Jackets, however, tying things up once again at 31-31 after a made two-point bucket followed by one free throw.
Grubb sunk another three, but Williamsburg continued to fight, retaking the lead once again and holding on to a narrow 38-36 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
The Cardinals scored five points early in the quarter to take the 41-38 lead, but the Jackets jumped back out front a few minutes later after a shot from senior Ethan Wilson gave them the 42-41 advantage. South then went on a 9-0 run, and eventually went on to win by a final score of 59-50.
“South Laurel has a nice ball club,” said Williamsburg Head Coach Patrick Robinson after the loss. “They play especially tough here at home. We had our chances, but we made some turnovers and gave them the opportunity to get the lead. Their guys stepped up and made the plays. Plus, we didn’t hit one three-point shot tonight. That hurt us.”
With the loss, the Yellow Jackets now sit at 18-2 on the season, 3-1 in district play. The Cardinals improve to 12-9, 3-2 in the district.
Williamsburg’s next district matchup will be at home against the Whitley County Colonels on Monday night.
