Senior Jason Killian competes in three events at KHSAA state swim championships
The Corbin High School boys swim team saw a total of four athletes competing in this past weekend’s KHSAA state championships in Lexington, with senior Jason Killian appearing in three separate events.
Killian swam in both the 100-meter freestyle and 100-meter breaststroke events, and he was also a part of the 200-meter freestyle relay team along with freshmen Blake Butler and Nick Partin, and junior Coleman Anderson.
The swimming Redhounds were unfortunately not able to qualify for the finals in any of the above-mentioned events, but Killian said that he was happy to have the chance to represent his school at the state level in his final season.
“Overall, I’m pretty happy with it considering some of the circumstances that I had to deal with,” Killian said. “I had a technical issue with one of my suits tearing right before one of my races, plus I had been sick. It wasn’t my best day, but even with all of that I still feel like I was able to do pretty decent.”
Killian has competed at the state level several times in the past, but he said that this latest trip felt more special since he is a senior leader on the team. “It is pretty cool to be at the top in terms of the grade level,” he said. “It was all of the other guys’ first time there, so I got to show them around, and show them the ropes.”
Reflecting on this past season, Killian said, “We had a good season. Our practices looked really good, and everyone put in a lot of effort. We have a tough region, and we’re a smaller program. Sometimes it can be hard to get to that higher level, but I think everybody put in a good amount of effort overall.”
As for how he sees things going for the CHS swim team moving forward, Killian said, “I think we have a lot of potential. I was the only senior boy this season, so I think that our boys relay team has a lot of potential for the future with everyone who will be coming back.”
Killian will now shift his focus onto continuing to compete in the pool as a member of a club swimming team.
After he graduates later this spring, he plans on swimming collegiately at Centre College in Danville.
