A local judge has agreed to serve a seven-day suspension, without pay, for violating the Code of Judicial conduct in regards to a case brought before her last year.
Cathy Prewitt, district judge in Whitley and McCreary Counties, will serve her suspension beginning Aug. 27 through Sept. 7 following an agreement reached with the Judicial Conduct Commission. The agreement was released Monday. It was dated July 10.
According to the "agreed order of suspension," Prewitt changed the bond of Steven Hinkle from $25,000 to $50,000 on May 12, 2014 without notice or a hearing. The change ocurred when Hinkle’s mother, Alma Ruth Hinkle, was attempting to pay the bond at the Whitley Circuit Clerk’s office.
Later that day during, during a hearing regarding Steven Hinkle’s case, Prewitt held Alma Ruth Hinkle in contempt of court and ordered her to serve 24 hours in jail for allegedly calling her a "bitch" while she was in the clerk’s office to pay the bond. The comment was made outside of Judge Prewitt’s presence. Alma Hinkle was held in contempt "without notice, a hearing, or the opportunity for Ms. Hinkle to have legal counsel present."

She is getting everything she needs right now. I wish they would fire her…. u can’t do that if ur not in a court from. I have had her for 2 years now an all she is good for is taken kids out of loving homes. I have never done a drug in my life an I am not a criminal but I can’t stand her.
i think they should impeach her and let fred white do all the courts or bring someone else in her or kim frost neither one needs in the court , but nobody runs othen than them two so ones get back in and ones as bad as other wish davis kersey was still here he would run against them
Historic Misuse of Power
Several years ago I had the misfortune of coming before Judge Prewitt’s courtroom to have a Domestice Violence Order renewed. My ex husband had stalked and committed multiple acts against me for three years before being sentenced to federal prison. He was soon to be released and I needed to keep the order current. When I arrived at court Judge Prewitt was back in closed chambers with my ex husband, his family members and his attorney who had him released from the halfway house to his custody. They came out and what proceeded was such a farce it was unbelievable. She denied an extension to my DVO and refused to keep it in place. My ex husband went on to break parole two more times after that and spent a total of 6 years in federal prison. This woman should never be allowed to reside as a Judge in a courtroom again.
You have to take the negative comments about Ms. Prewitt on here with a grain of salt. Most of you all are criminals or losers who have been in her court and you are just mad that things didn’t go your way.
Just because she’s a judge doesn’t mean anything. Outside the courtroom she just a normal person. And she still has to obey the law.
She is only fair to certain people! When you are a judge you should be fair to everyone not just the ones you like and you should go by the law period! I remember having a conversation with a young girl that was in the court system under Prewitt and she was bragging that she had tested postitive for meth and a number of other drugs. She said Kathy didnt take her child away from her and didnt order futher drug test for her! I asked the girl how could this be when I knew a girl that test positive for just pot and Kathy took her kids out of the home and would not place them with family members even though one of the family members was more qualified then the foster care that she sent the children to! The girl said well I guess Miss Prewitt just likes me! This girl that was bragging ended up killing her new born child in a prison bathroom! Just maybe this could have been pervented if only the judge would have treated everyone the same.
Just sayin from a perspective of someone who has been there before. This is not the first time she has used her personal agenda in the courtroom. I personally have stood up for my chosen when there was actually a communication problem with the schools an was treated like a criminal an so was my children. I spoke truths an she turned her back an stopped listening an put so many charges on all my kids because she was proven wrong. Kept my kids in the system for years because of it. I even had notarized papers from the school saying they had made a mistake an my child was one of the best students they have had. 3 more years in the system. Thanks you. If you in the least bit stand up for yourself or your kids an don’t go with the flow of her decisions, it don’t go well for you. My hat goes off to the family and the attorney for standing up and doing what is right. If someone does you an injustice you should be able to envoke your constitutional right of freedom of speech an right to fair hearing. This is why we have these laws. Because no one Judge or not is not above them.
I am no fan of the court or judicial system but ive stood in front of her at least 100 times in the past 14 years. I’m 26 so since I was 12. She was my family’s court judge and then saved my life by putting me in drug court when I was 17. She’s been nothing but fair and very caring. If she thought that man should have stayed locked up I guarantee she done it for a good reason. Rules are rules though I guess. Wish her the best.
Ok so just because the lady called her a bitch does not give her the right to do what she did to the fact they was not in a court room and I’m sure this is not the first time someone called her a bitch… You can’t throw everyone in jail that calls you a bitch just because your a judge!

This is utter bull obviously someone rubbed her the wrong way I myself have been in front of her at least 50 times from age 13 to 21 and she has been a huge eye opener for me and fair as can be ! crazy how so much bad can be said for her simply standing her grounds if she wasant a judge it would be oka and fair for her to do this. I support you Cathy !!!
I can see why that boy’s mother was mad if the judge just changed the bond like that. That does seem sort of corrupt. I would bet this is not the first time it has happened.
